Topping off with another oil brand

When I change my oil I use BMW twin power turbo 10W 60 oil change kit from FCP.

You guys know how expensive that damn stuff is and my car burns 3L of it between every 5k oil change.

Would it be okay for top off the 3L between changes with much less expensive liqui moly 10w 60?

I promise I searched!

Yes absolutely. People tend to overthink this, mixing oil is perfectly fine. It's also done to achieve a certain viscosity.

I used to be paranoid about oil being 100% the same because of stupid online myths. In time I realized how it makes no sense. As long as you aren't mixing conventional with synthetic. I wouldn't experiment with that.

Thanks man. I overthink just about everything I do to my M. I had a feeling it was going to be fine.

I agree with not overthinking this sort of thing. The additive packages among oil brands in the same weight are not identical but I would not worry. Unless you are tracking the car, I would not even worry about mixing weights or running a lighter weight oil like 0W40, 5W40 or 5W50. Change the rod bearings, change the oil regularly, let the engine warm up before exceeding 3000 rpm, and enjoy the car.

Otoh, 3L every 5K is something you should be thinking about. That sounds rather excessive.

I know. The local performance shop ran a dye test and a compression test. They found nothing. Such a pita always adding oil. The shop told me that for the S65 bmw's threshold is 1.2L approx every 600 miles. How crazy is that.

Right, it’s well within spec. My car uses a fair amount as well. I don’t really keep track but think it’s probably in the range of 2-3L per 5000 miles. I have run mostly thinner 0W40 and am often cruising at 4000 rpm. I think if I ran thicker oil and drove slower consumption would be a little less.

You sure do have to pay to play with the E9X, but the smiles per miles are so worth it.

I have not paid much. Bought all my performance parts used and I have done all work myself. Rod bearings cost me $500-600.

You are one of the lucky ones. I'm not mechanically inclined. Besides paying 4K for a 6yr 50k exclusionary policy, I haven't paid anything additional except for crazy expensive oil changes. The warranty company has already paid out over 6k in just 15 months.

3L/5k miles, jeez! Can't be right, don't car what BMW are trying to cover their A with.
Still, your engine seem to run fine. Mine doesnt drink a drop between changes, where are these crazy differences between engines come from??
