Injector service on the S65
So salt is on the roads and I’m doing valve cover gaskets and while I’m in there I will have the injector harness disconnected and since that’s 1/3 of the way to the injectors coming out, wondering if there is a while I’m in there benefit to sending them off to be tested and cleaned at 104,000 miles (3/08 build).
Sooooo anybody pulled these and found lazy injectors once they get up in age? Any service shops that do a particularly good job? Could be a waste of time but with occasional fail-open injector cylinder kerblammos on this engine family figured I’d check and see if anyone has an anecdote or two to share

I'm about to do the same actually and trying to consider a few places.
The person that rebuilt my E46 M3 injectors doesn't seem to be around anymore. I was going to contact a local Authorized Bosch Fuel Injector rebuilder. They did a set of S62B50 injectors for me with great results. The service include full rebuild and cleaning; ultrasonic cleaning, new o-rings, flow bench testing before/after.

Btw #1 injector spring clip on my car thought it would be cute to hide under one of the throttle actuators for 20 minutes while I alternately looked for it and contemplated burning the house down for the insurance money

I didn’t pull them yet but pointer re the above experience for the harness: when disengaging the spring clips don’t let them pop off the connector for the love of god

I send injectors to Deatschwerks.
I've had a couple in the past come back that were reportedly sticking during their initial dyno. Once serviced they tested 100%. |

I'm hoping to do One Lap this year so...maybe it makes sense to just go ahead and do it. This is why I have to keep the heat at 60 degrees at night because while I'm in there turns into why not spend another $200

Back in my Honda days these guys were considered the benchmark for injector service (and even upgrades): http://www.rceng.com/
They can do flow testing and cleaning -- give them a call and see if they'll work on yours. And yes, injectors can get build-up or deteriorate with age.

Good to see no one recommend injector cleaner being put into the fuel tank! Stay away from that stuff, in the worst case it could dislodge debris and send it into your injector.

Is this an actual thing? Never heard that before, but I literally just bought a bottle of Techron Injector cleaner yesterday and was gonna throw it in for good measure.

Gasoline has injector cleaner in it and people put it in their tanks. What is interesting is that these cars don’t seem to have a routinely replaceable fuel filter.

But they come with some of the o-rings, so that's a nice discount off the $1600...
I left them in because impatience to drive it again. If I have to pull it back apart because I screwed up something with the valve covers I'll probably send them off as penance

Unless a car was severely neglected for a long time, those cleaners are not going to cause a problem and are safe for periodic maintenance dosages.

Its basically the same thing that goes into your gas except its much less concentrated. Won't hurt anything unless you continuously overdose your gas.

Techron additive isn't going to knock any chunks loose at 20oz/16 gallons, but some of the stuff that's out there, that might be beneficial for the old fire-hose TBI setups, I understand can really screw with the normal fallout in a gas tank and send nasty crap upstream. PEA (From what I remember) doesn't have much effect at the temps the fuel delivery system sees, it's doing most of its work on the hot stuff
Chevron's marketing stuff on it is fun to read (GASP THERE'S ETHANOL IN MY GAS?! SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!)

Our tanks are plastic. There's really nothing to clean in these like there were in the old days of steel tanks.
I've never ever seen a tank in these cars that had debris or buildup of any kind inside. Our plastic tank systems stay very clean. The sock on the pump pickup will catch any larger debris and the screens on the injectors will catch the small stuff. |
