Kawasaki,
Then I'm pretty sure you've seen my M1 0w40 UOA. My plan is to run a longer oci, some track days and dyno pulls add to the mix and do another analysis. |

I saw those, you have any vanos noise out of it? I have also been looking at the Belgium Castrol but the VI is lower, probably going to run the mobil next. I don't do any track days and my biggest extent is a blast up the interstate. Let me know when you get the next one sent off.

No noticeable difference as far as engine noise goes, but oil does get up to the operating temp faster and no oil temp difference as far as street driving is concerned.
At $22.47 for a 5qt jug of M1 0w40 at Walmart, it's going to be hard for me to try anything else, unless the protection is otherwordly. You think your S65 loves to rev? Get ready for a better experience once you switch to the 40wt oil. |

17hp on a 400hp motor is 4.25%. I'd say that's pretty close to a dyno's margin of error.

You can buy G-Oil at Wal-mart, which is a bio-ester derived from beef tallow. Or if you're a vegetarian, you can run Renewable Lube which is derived from plant oils. BTW, Castrol's name comes from castor oil, which was (and still is) a very good lubricant.

It is thinner. I was the one who brought that point up: M1R 0w50 HTHS = 3.8 (coincidentally the same HTHS as M1 0w40) TWS HTHS = 5.2 That means the operational viscosity of TWS is some 36% heavier! And yes, if you can't get sufficient oil pressure, you run in bypass mode for too long. That's bad. But going too thick means that the oil pump is working quite hard to force that stuff around, which robs you of horsepower. It also means the oil temps rise and stay elevated. As I've said repeatedly, "as thin as possible but as thick as necessary." You need to use an oil pressure gauge to check if the oil is the correct viscosity.

TWS doesn't use castor oil. You are thinking of Castrol Formula R Synthetic. It was a red 15w50 oil with castor oils in it. TWS is a derivative, according to Doug Hilary. TWS's claim to fame is that it is rich in group V oils (esters/ANs/etc).

Sounds like someone need a new dyno because that is horrible. Should be no more than 1%

When running a quart low on OEM TWS 10-60W, any harm in using M1 0-40W for top off ?

Motul in M3
I have also tried Motul 300W 15W50 Ester base oil in my S65. Engine was super smooth and a little bit quiter (maybe because it is thinner than Castrol 10w/0).
Unfortunatly Motul do not produce 10W60 oils, but produces - ester based 10W40 - ester based 15W50 (i have tried this) - ester based 20W60 (maybe this is too thin for our engine). Any idea which is best for S65 on the mentioned above ester based line? |
