E92 original paint thickness measurements?

Hello forum friends!

In case you know what the paint thickness was when an E92 was brand new, please post it here.

If different panels have different thickness, please do the same. Not unlikely, as there are three different materials under the paint, i.e. aluminum (hood), synthetic/plastic (fenders, bumper covers) and steel (rest of the body, except of course for CF roofs).

Many thanks, and safe & enjoyable miles to everyone!

Sadly, you are not going to find any definitive answer. The best answer I can give you based on my painting two E92 M3 and an F82 M4 is: "It all depends on paint color, year, etc., and no two cars are exactly the same, and generally most E9x cars will be in the 120-160 microns."

But at the end of the day, a generic answer doesn't really provide much value. All that matters is measuring YOUR car and identifying why you need to know the thickness of the paint, such as, if a panel has likely been repainted, or how much paint correction you can perform before getting into the danger zone.

It's not great, like 4mil. New cars are even worse. My 2022 x7 has 3.5-4.

most BMW panels are measured 3.5-5 depending on the paint..

You can't measure plastic panels, so our e9x fenders and bumpers cant be measured.

I've worked with BMW and appraised 100s of BMWs at my dealerships and I've need some crazy stuff... OEM paint jobs reading 10+ on the paint meter.

Honestly, just make sure you have a good bodyshop paint it properly. OEM paint kinda sucks, crazy orange peel.
