Why can't anyone else do this? RTTI question.

BMW gives you RTTI free. The system picks of FM radio signals from multiple different sources and this feature is built into the Nav system.

Why can't Porsche, Mercedes,Audi,Lexus and other premium segment auto manufacturers do this? Why won't they do this? They give you 3 months free then you have create and account with XM/Sirrius and get traffic from them. I really appreciate BMW offering this system free to it's consumers. Anyone have any insight?

Wifey has an 09 MBZ CLS550 and has a subscription to sirius/xm and still gets no traf-uk. How lame is that?? ..and BMW gives it to you, along with a no swiss cheese maint and warrantee. i-drive, is WAY more intuitive than the insane system in her car.....

BMW wins, hands down IMHO

Really!? No traffic and you have a subscription to Sirius/XM? You guys need to go talk to your dealer! The RTTI really came in handy for me today. There was an accident and I didn't know about it. The Nav screen triangle lit up red and let me know the highway was closed, and it re-routed me automatically. I'm getting to the new iDrive system. This was on a 2011 X5.

The reason is that the traffic service broadcast over FM that BMW uses is free, whereas XM/Sirius don't give their service away. Also, an XM subscription is separate from an XM NavTraffic subscription; the latter is an additional charge.

I understand that, but why is BMW offering it free but nobody else is?

Maybe they feel XM/Sirius has more timely/reliable/widespread traffic coverage? I haven't compared the two so that's a total guess on my part, but I can't think of any other possibility short of some consumer-screwing partnership where XM pays Porsche to incorporate their service so Porsche customers have to pay XM to get traffic info. If that's the case, then

I think that BMW RTTI is free to US customers just because it cost nothing to implement to BMW... this is the same system that BMW uses in Europe.

There's no XM/Sirius over there.

So Audi's,P-Cars,MB's don't get traffic info in Europe? That's pretty neat though.

I think that all cars in Europe get RTTI thru RDS.

It's actually the other way round, BMW has introduced RTTI in Germany only just (Sep built onwards). There were other traffic info features before, though (TMC for free and VI+ via connected drive).

All cars get TMC through RDS, RTTI gets transmitted via mobile network. First three years are free as part of connected drive.

Best regards,
south

You are correct for Europe, here in the USA BMW uses the name RTTI for the RDS-TMC system.

Garage List
I have traffic in my new CLS, better than the iDrive, no question.

Not sure if it's Sirius traffic or through another system but it works great.

I'm thinking it's Sirius/XM. You get 3 months free then you have to pay.
