Custom Radar Detector Installation -PICS now

Hi guys,

I had a K40 Calibre in my M45 and I had it moved over to the M3 today. Although the remote bluetooth design is stupid, the unit always worked fine for me. Plus, I like the rear radar receiver. The Passport 9500ci doesn't offer this, and a built in was imperative.

In any event, the K40 had two small LED pods that mounted in the instrument cluster in front of the speedo and tach. Looked just fine in the M45. The M3 has less room there than the M45 so it looked bulky and stupid. Big problem. So, we decided to mount the LEDs in the actual instruments. Now, the front and rear blue LEDs reside inside the cluster, in the upper part next to the turn signal lights. Looks factory and very trick.

I have a bunch of pictures that I'll post in a little bit. I heard it was a bitch to install! The pics are of the install process and show the cluster removed..... Very cool stuff. My friend who owns the shop has mixed emotions regarding me posting his info since he said it was very involved and would be quite costly to do. Sounded like he will only do it again for the right price!

Be back soon with pics and more info.

Pics were sent to work... I'll post them tomorrow. I gotta say though that install is SICK. Blue LEDs in the cluster. Invisible unless going off. Not a scratch anywhere. I am really happy. Not cheap though! 11 hours of work between the R&R of the M45 and the install. Plus the car was picked up and delivered.

Those LEDs suck. I put the same one's in my instrument panel when I first made the bad decision to go with K40. If those things light up at night you can't see shit

I tried that. They were still bright. Anyway, glad you're happy with it. I didn't like it at all.

You may be right. I think we used different LEDs for the built in install. We also fine tuned the pad resistor. It really is ideal now.

I'd have loved the Passport 9500ci but I need rear radar detection. As far as I know, the K40 is the only game in town. Unless I opted for windshield mount (no way). And I already owned the K40.....
