The benefits of this tstat are more so for the streets, the e60 m5 is usually around 205* for most driving, maybe 210* which isn’t hot enough to boil off condensation from the crankcase.

Ecu on S65/s85 reads coolant temp to determine the afr. When it sees the warmer coolant temp, it needs less fuel for combustion in a hot cylinder than it does in a cool cylinder.

Every customer I have had use this thermostat has given feedback of at least 20% fuel mileage efficiency.

Engine oil thermostat is 200F, so any thermostat for water under that temp is stupid as the engine will constantly fight itself over the water and oil temp thermostats differing

The warmer coolant thermostat tightens up the piston to wall clearance on a factory S65/s85 which will greatly reduced your oil consumption and increase compression which is power.

Combine that with 5w50 and you will see an incredible difference in the motor. So much so that you won't believe two small changes make such a benefit.

Don't forget I have had 2 m3 e90 and e92. One was tire rack one lap of America car with supercharger and meth on stock 4.0L S65. Ran 5w50 and this blower and it was perfect even on track.

Stick with the status quo of terrible fuel mileage, bearing wear, oil consumption... Or switch and wake up your motor. I have no financial benefit from this. It is my job to keep my 440+ s85 and s65 and s63 builds on the road. Clearly I am going to find the best solutions to the issues that are present from the poor factory specifications on oil and coolant temps and oil weight, etc.

Anyone that trys this thermostat and 5w50 and then tells me they didn't see an improvement I will build you a free stroker 4.4L or 4.8L. No one is going to message me because it will improve everyone one of these worn out s65.

I use 5W50 Motul Sport Ester and I didn't see any differences in oil temps in both daily and track driving, outside of quicker cool downs at the end of each session. Running temps are the same.

Im interested in trying this out, though Im weary since it gets stupid hot here in central FL.

Also note my S65 doesn't consume any oil in the 5k mile service intervals it receives. I also average 19 MPG...

i can see getting to operating temps sooner being beneficial for getting the piston rings up to temp sooner into someones driving. the claims seem a bit bold.
i'm not a mechanic and i don't have a reason to try to convince anyone otherwise. i'll stick with 10/60 oil, but if i absolutely had to pick another, 5/60 isn't a bad choice. seems pretty conservative with no downsides.

Troy, what do you think of 0W40 or 5W40 oil in anS65 that is street driven only?

I am amazed at how long this engine takes to get up to temp. The S54 took a while, but this is really a long time. The oil temp needle wakes up sooner in the S65, which I think is good for cold start wear, but takes far longer to get up to full temp before you can have any fun. For my CA-driven weekend/canyon car, this thermostat could make some sense.

That is all I have to add, haha.

Still have it in my room, just too lazy to install it.

Anyone have a good DIY thread with proper pictures? or a video?

It's just as easy as the throttle actuators.

I am definitely intrigued by this, but remain skeptical. Even if the purported benefits are 1/10th in reality, it still sounds interesting.

But I am curious - if BMW designed the OE Thermostat as a compromise for various environments and conditions, where is such a thermostat spec ideal? It seems like in CA, this 190F unit makes sense... But then, where wouldn't it? I've never changed thermostats, as you can probably surmise.

* Dang, I thought the t-stat was an easier swap than the actuators. Guess I'll wait until one is due then do them together.

Removing the plenum was so easy, I decided to do my thermostat later.

if i'm going to do all that- i'd proactively replace the water pump. seems like its an extra 20 minutes.

Who has had a water pump fail? What mileage? I am at 10 years and 95k and making a list of things to do this year as preventative maintenance. Tie rods, thermostat, valve cover and plug gaskets, new coils, clean fuel injectors, pulleys and tensioners and belts, etc.

I had my water pump replaced at 95k miles. I was having cooling issues so decided to replace t-stat and pump. The pump had some scoring on it but was otherwise fine. My issue was most likely my t-stat. Prior to swapping it out, my engine took forever to get up to temp so my guess is that the old t-stat wasn't closing all the way or something. BTW, the mechanic said he didn't recommend the metal impeller version of the water pump. He said if something goes wrong, you end up with metal in your engine instead of the plastic.

Yea, until I see a problem with the plastic impellers taking a dump, I don't see a point to using metal.

I'll purchase coolant sometime this week or next and replace the T-Stat finally. Just need to find sometime first.

With a 190 stat & BE bearings should one stick with 10w60 because of the extra bearing clearance?

10w60 is fine. Redline 5w50 is also a fantastic oil to substitute.

is there any reason you chose this one over Redline, Ravenol RRS, or even Amsoil 5w50s?
i think its really old
