Turbo_Joe Rebuild Thread

Just realized I have never made a build thread for my M3.

Long time build over the years as I bought my M3 as a pristine one owner car almost 8 years ago.

TLDR:
This is how the car looks right now. Wide body with 18x11 +5 (final offset) 315/30/18 hoosiers, satin pearl white wrap, almost ready for wheel to wheel racing next season.

Video of the car in action after the wide body rebuild, I was .3 sec off the track record here:

Stock Car:
One owner 2012 M3 with 30k miles purchased in 2015

Building a fun street car and starting autocross:

Started HPDE:
Added a roll bar and some seats/harnesses, upgraded to KW Club Sport suspension, made small changes here and there , added stoptech BBK

Started Time Trials 2021:
As I got more into HPDE and advanced through the groups I started getting into time trials with NASA. The car was no longer really used on the street and I got a lot more serious with the build.

This progressed and I went with larger aero, hoosier slicks, and fully gutted the car and removed the wrap.

Prepping for wheel to wheel racing next season (2022):
Next step was full 8 point cage and prep the car for wheel to wheel racing. Also installed lexan windows, pulled the radio, and all around tried to lighten the car while adding the cage.

Road Atlanta Incident:
Running time trials at Road Atlanta I lost the car in turn 3/4 and put it into the tire wall. Lots of cosmetic damage but I knew the car was repairable. I managed to take home first place even though I wrecked in my second session.

Wide body to fix wrecked car:
After dealing with insurance and finally getting a check for the damages it was time to DIY some repairs. I ended up deciding to go WIDE to easily fit 18x11s with 315s all around on the car. The wide body kit is made by Big Duck Club. Its made for a base 3 series so it took some finesse to make it work on the M3 chassis. Very happy with the end results and the car feels amazing on such wide tires.

First track day back after the rebuild I took home P1 in the Car and Driver Lightning Lap Challenge and took home P1 both days of time trials. It was a hell of a redemption weekend for me.

315 square. Yup, that outta get the job done.

Glad to see that V2 of the car is faster and more better!

I was finally out pushing my repaired beast around Chuckwalla this weekend. Really enjoyed being back in the driver's seat going for lap times.

It was a night and day difference having the 315s. The car felt incredible. Going to Summit Point in two weeks and going after the TT3 track record or at least try to get close.

With the widebody would you be bumped to ST2? Guessing not since you can still run TT3

No I am still building the car to run ST3. Their are no limits on tire/body width for ST3. This is why I tried to stuff as much tire under the car as possible.

All else the same, going from 295s to 315s I shaved 2.2 seconds off my PB at VIR.

So this is what I missed in October??!! Damn Joey!! Absolutely flying! I will see you this weekend @ SP. A shame we couldn't have had the 75 degree weather from this past weekend. Gonna need your Arctic expedition gear instead!

Some recent updates

Added some front splitter diffusers from Professional Awesome and built a rear diffuser. First time doing anything like this and it ended up being a lot of work. Had to make a lot of custom mounts but very happy with how it turned out.

Also started installing my fire suppression, new water bottle for my drink system, digital rear view mirror and redid my switch panel

Attended competition licesne school with NASA on friday and had my first races. Practice/comp eval race friday (which I won) and three legit races over the weekend. The comp license school was in the rain all day which made things more interesting.

Sundays late race was the best for me, had a rough start getting pushed off in T1 thanks to the guys next to me getting bumped by another car. Came back on track in 11th (from 5th) and fought my way back to finish P4.

How did you accomplish the widebody? Did you use off-the-shelf parts/kit or did you have to manufacture it yourself?

The setup is from Big Duck Club (they do mostly drift stuff) The kit is NOT made for an M3, but for a base 3 series so the front fenders do not bolt on. I had to cut them up and make them into over fenders.

The kit is good enough for a race car

Yep, finally got my paperwork together. Car didn't put down as much hp as I thought so I was able to squeeze into TT2. As long as I don't weigh in less than 3,601 I'm good.

During one run this weekend I miscalculated my fuel and basically came in on fumes. The CBS said I had 2 miles until empty so that put me at about a 1/2 gallon of remaining gas. At that level I still weighed 3,610 so basically will be next to impossible for me to get DQ'd for being too light. I was puckered up real good on that cool down lap.
