while I would typically agree with this if someone was limited to one car, OP does have an M3 for fun and excitement. He just needs another car for basic transport, which the Japanese just do really well. No fuss, no worries, just a car for A to B.

All more reason to be in a BMW 3-series. Just sayin'

What I can attest to is back in the late '80's early 1990's my now wife (then GF) was driving the E30 and I was dailying a 1989 Acura Integra (100 miles a day). Guess what car I would have preferred to be in? The BMW was almost twice the price as the Acura... and for good reason.

Guys thanks for the great info. So many things to consider. I should just get a newer Raptor and be done with it haha

Acura RDX with the Tech package. Its boring, built like a tank, parts are easy to find, reliable, holds its value rather well when your son wraps it around a tree while driving in the snow.

Volvo Suv also comes to mind for the same reasons.

I would avoid the first gen though, I believe they use the 5-Speed Auto that's been plagued with issues in millions of Honda's.

Expensive repairs IMHO, could be wrong but not known for reliability. Volvo is sneaky expensive.

An older i3. It's what's driven for errands, work, beach hauling or if I need to stuff two bikes in the back. The collapsible seats do wonders!

I've had a lot of 'beaters' over the years. My favorite was probably the 2008 Honda Fit. I drove the car 100K miles, only ever feeding it consumables, most of the time with a dumb grin on my face because of how tossable the little guy was.

These days I don't rack up the miles as much as I used to, so a 100K-with-no-major-repairs car isn't as important as it once was. My most recent beater was a Lexus GS350, which I bought CPO and which gave me 60K bulletproof miles. I swapped it for a Mercedes E350 wagon which, while probably not as economical to own, is far more useful. If Lexus made a 5/E class wagon I'd have given it a long look.

Not really a "beater" but my 2011 335xi is the one we would use for hauling hay, or sheep, or running cattle.
Of course, we've never done any of those things with it, but given our choices, it would be the one.

BMW 125d, it’s a fun car with plenty of power which returns great mpg. Due to Covid it hasn’t had much use and as working from home is the new norm my 150 mile three times a week trek has disappeared. Not great for a diesel..

So my next ‘beater’ will be something like a G20 330i petrol. Just looking for good deals..

1990 Miata. Hell of a car. Cost me $1800, spend $3 a month on insurance, and it's actually fun to drive.

I'm strongly considering one to replace my dd (06 r53 mini cooper) that is shockingly, a gas guzzler (mpg in the teens, at best, on city driving). The i3 is so quirky that i love it. Need to do some more reading on the i3 pages but have you taken it on road trips and what do you do about range anxiety? Just keep filing up the generator tank?

The i3 is a lovely quirk-mobile. Unfortunately no roads trips for this one, as it mostly stays in the county for work. Range anxiety doesn’t surface as I charge at my work offices. I haven’t put gas in this thing in about 6 weeks!

But yes, it’s short range is it’s biggest drawback. It’s function has to be thought of a little bit more than other cars. A fellow asked me if I’d recommend it for his daily commute from Riverside County to San Diego. It was a quick no. The big question seems to be “Will it serve it’s purpose efficiently?”

My beater is a 1995 Ford F150. It cost me $1500 and I've put about $1000 in repairs and tires in the four years I've owned. 225k miles on it. I drive it from mid-November until whenever I get whatever project I'm doing on my n54 335i done. I'm looking to replace it with a Land Rover LR3 or LR4 before this winter, though. I want something that can carry more people and still allow us to go on off-roading adventures, which are plentiful where I live in Idaho.

I'm a strong believer in a couple of principles for multiple car ownership.

1) If you have a project car or a model known for unreliability, you should have a second vehicle to drive while your project is on jack stands or in the shop.

2) If you're going to own multiple vehicles they should have different utilities from each other. A truck is awesome because you can haul stuff when you need to. A minivan or three row SUV is awesome if you have kids. A sports car is awesome because sports car. You get the point. I don't see the point in owning a midsize crossover and a sedan. If I needed a do-it-all vehicle it would be different, but if you're going to own multiples they should have more focused uses, IMO.

Great points guys especially different vehicles with different utilities.

Are older Rovers unreliable?

So many raptors are well over 100k mi. They gotta be well built?
