2008 was the first year of production for US, had no more or less issues compared to other years. It was pretty much the same car mechanically throughout the life cycle 08-13.

For 09+ models, BMW updated the iDrive system. There were other slight changes (clutch, rod bearings) but no different power outputs like the new model.

BMW did offer a competition package option (11-13) that received different wheels, springs and had stability/traction reprogrammed due to new hardware (again no changes to the engine).

There was a BMW M3 GTS, but that is completely different car that is almost impossible to buy.
