Why are my brake discs rusty?

Hi.

I washed my wheels last week but the car has not been driven since.

Before i washed the alloys my discs were all nice and shiny but looking at them today they are all brown and look like they have rusted all over.
Any ideas or know how i can clean them and what causes this.

Thanks in advance.

steel rotors usually develop a thin layer of rust if not driven for a few days especially after exposure to moisture. just drive normally and after a few brake applications all the rust will be wiped off.

Everytime I wash my car I need to take it for a drive around the block as my pads will lock to the rotors making it hard to break free when I drive it later. This is with a Brembo BBK. I am in the habit of taking it around the block after each wash and no rust or locking of rotors to pads.

Just be VERY careful. Not sure how much driving experience you have, but the M3 is quite powerful and rear wheel drive. It can be a handful for new drivers. And always keep the traction control on until your skill level goes up. And consider going to track days and getting professional instruction.

I would have recommended a Honda S2000 or Toyota GT86 as far better cars than the E92 M3 for a novice driver, but whatever. The deal is done. Enjoy the car, but have common sense, and make sure you keep your speed below your talent level.

At the risk of sounding like my Dad... EXCELLENT advice.

The truth is that IMO, all but very, very few of us on this board couldn't benefit from additional HPDE or track time. But that's especially true if you're just learning to drive and lucky enough to be learning behind the wheel of an M3.

Congrat's and many happy, safe miles.
