ProTool by BimmerGeeks vs. Carly

So I've had my e90 M3 for 2 months now and I've thought about getting Carly to do some customizing and recently heard about ProTool by BimmerGeeks that was just released today. Has anyone beta tested for it and can tell me the pros and cons vs. Carly?

I've never used protool, but I can tell you I've had issues using generic code readers for BMWs. in one case it wasn't properly showing the throttle position it was reading 75% when it was 100. I like Carly because it's BMW specific and it's cheap as compared to buying a BMW specific code tool. It does enough things to keep me happy like managing my OBD2 readiness, doing light coding, checking and clearing codes Etc.

True. Carly does however now charge a yearly subscription Brad, to be prepared for that. It's nominal but it is something.

Having both of them, ProTool takes the cake but it is slightly more expensive overall.
In reference, I rather use Rheingold over Carly when diagnosing & coding.
Since ProTool came out, I've been using that over Rheingold as it is quicker.

From my experience I’m not a fan of Carly. Battery registration does not work properly and the app itself is very glitchy when using their WiFi adapter or a generic one. Customer service is also poor especially for an app that’s been out for a while.

I contacted Apple and received a refund...

I just went to bimmergeeks new pro tool website and I'm very impressed by what I'm reading. It can reset adaptations, vin match modules, in the airbag section it looks like it can code out airbags. If this is all true this doesn't even come close to Carly. I'm going to read up on it more and possibly do some testing

pretty cool, i was just on BimmerGeeks site last nite looking at all of this. Seems like a very user friendly way to start coding and being able to swap out parts which would have required a visit to dealer or local coder.

I just wish the new protool app could also work on older generations, like e53/e46/e39. I have to swap out a SAS on my e53, and have been tryn to figure out how to code the new sensor after the replacement. Also its not clear if this work on multiple vehicles or if it becomes VIN locked to one car.

If someone can confirm that Protool does DCT relearn then it would be great for DIY clutch changes

I have bought the bluetooth adapter and got the master license.
If by DCT relearn you mean Adaptatin reset, then yes, you can do that.

I was able to use it for my folding mirror retrofit, but it can't (yet) enable more than 3 blink signal.
They do updates regularly on the app.
I'll try to post screen shots of all available options, well for my E90 LCI anyway.

Thanks for chiming in.
There is a Transmission adaptation reset as well as a Clutch adaption reset.
Looking through ISTA-D it seems this will be the cheapest option just a pain to setup.

Not that bad, it's like 5 bucks a month, so still reasonable for the ton of money that you actually can save with it

Hi,
I've been using ProTool for about 2 days now. (The diagnostics license, not yet the Coding license).

I have managed to replace VIN in the Roof module, and change VIN in the driver seat module for my E90. I have used a $20 cable from China, and it has worked ok.

But I have noticed one surprising thing about my car, when I turn on the ignition it doesn't wake up the DSC module and Park Assist Module. Only after I start the engine the scan tool can 'find' these modules. It seems to be an issue with my car, not with ProTool, as the same happens when I try an older version of INPA also.

(Key pushed in /ignition on = Can see 19 modules). (Start button ON, engine running, can see 21 modules). I though I should be able to see the DSC just by pushing in the key in the key without engine running. Can someone confirm if this is normal, or a fault with my car?

I have replaced DSC module since the old one was crushed, so the second hand module has a different VIN and is not operating due to the VIN difference.
Anyway, when the car is running, I can't manage to replace VIN in the DSC module by using ProTool. It says 'successful', but the VIN remains the same.

Today I have done electric trouble shooting of the wiring and fuses. There are 3 different power supplies to the DSC, two thick wires, and one small wire. they are all powered with 12V at all times. (perhaps not when the car is asleep) Anyway, these are all powered even before the ignition is on.
Therefore it looks like some 'wake-up' problem?
If anyone has ideas that would be helpful.

My last attempt will be to try to write new VIN with Tool32 to the module while the car is running. Not sure if its a good idea, but the only I can think of.

Cheers,

In a sp00l str33t thread I read BimmerGeeks had said they are not VIN-locking ProTool but you might wanna check with them to be 100% sure.

It's not locked to a VIN, it's though tied to one Google account. You can't transfer it to a diffetent Google account.

I just tried it yesterday on a Mini Cooper, and it connected just fine.

From my understanding protool doesn't offer that yet. Shoot me a pm if you need any remote services done!
