You don't seem to be able to grasp the simple concept that today's Panerai has nothing to do with the original Panerai and is all marketing.
How is any of the above a novel point? AND???? Where is the crime? At what point should Panerai scrap their heritage and continue making watches? I really fail to see any point you're making because none of it makes sense. You think Ford, for example, can survive in today's market if they still made self-crank engines and cars with bike tires? :Head-explodes:

That's not a point. That's an opinion. One that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Big watches are big.

Our conversation has gone something like this:

Me: Oversized flashy watches look bad.. look at that guy, his watch is bigger than his hand.

You: The watches are giant because pilots and divers need to see them!

Me: But that guy is not a pilot, he is sitting behind a desk, he can't even button his shirt cuffs because his watch is so big, and yes.. the watch still looks stupid.

You: The company that made that watch was founded in 1860!! They were instrumental in Italy's efforts in World war II!

Me: What the fuck does that have to do with how the watch looks NOW? Plus that's just about the worst brand heritage you could have this side of Volkswagen.

You: But, but, your arguments are irrelevant!! Does he need to be a pilot to fly a plane to wear a watch that is the size of a plane? He could be wearing a peacoat but not be in the Navy!

Me: WTF dude, nevermind.
We would get along so well...you sarcastic prick. Love it! P.S. Here's how our convo would go:

Me: You can be my wing man anytime!

You: B.S., you can be my wingman!

Me: Makes no shit to me...let's roll with our big flashy watches

[insert music - sippin on sum Starbucks...laid back...with my mind on my big fat wrist watch, and my big watch wrist watch on my mind...]

Seriously though, I am surprised none of you mentioned you like the 201-carat Chopard: $25 million price tag:

Do know about watches? You may not be into them, but if you buy a BBK, 95% of the owners will not track the car where you actually need it. You sell it in 3-4 years and lose 25% of what you paid.

You buy a nice watch and wear it for 3-4 years and then sell it for... same as you bought it for.

I'm just saying.

You need to learn a bit more before guessing. The IWC "turbo" is in the $70K - $90K depending on the finish.

Watches are really no different than cars, so the trite comments about cell phones keeping better time makes zero sense. Just because you can't relate or appreciate fine mechanical watches doesn't make you right, just different.

People concerned about getting from point A to B would obviously suggest an Accord and laugh at the foolishness of paying for a BMW. BMW buyers suffer from the same love of fine engineering as watch nuts do. As I share a love of both passions I think I understand the OP. To answer him, however, is harder. It's a personal thing, like should I pick AW over SSII. I get tired of people asking the masses what they should like.
This.

Also, OP, skip the Panerai and go for the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph....or a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Compressor!

I'd think you'd lose more than 25%. 50% would make more sense. As for watch resale, it depends on the brand. Rolex, yes. Other brands, unless bought at a huge discount or 2nd hand, then no.

As a watch guy (who has over 15 watches) I can say that all you really need is an everyday watch and a dress watch.

And a Panerai... ugh... swinging d*ck watch. I can think of so many other things to spend that much money on. I personally wouldn't spend that on any watch (a couple of my most expensive are in the 2500 range) and even then, they just sit while my G-Shock sits on my wrist 99% of time.

BBK.

Get a decent replica watch ( Like my IWC 3717) and save wasting $10,000 on a gen watch that probably costs only $500 to produce.

Sorry man, if your most expensive watch is $2,500... you're not a watch guy. I own many watches among them multiple rolexes breitlings, tags and my favorite a panerai 328...definitely not a swinging dick kind of watch, most people are clueless as to what it is and thats why it has turned into my favorite piece I own. I can't remember the last time I wore any of my rolexes.
