Yokohama ADVAN A052 Tires - 265/295 - for Track Days

Update: 10/09/18 - Decided in favor of the Yokohama ADVAN A052 tires - 265/295

--------------------------
I would like to try these tires next, 275/35 front and 295/30 rear. These will be dedicated track tires. I'll be using a 10" front and a 11" rear wheel.

The 275/35/18 tires, according to Tirerack, have a load rating of LL which means a max load of 1,201 lbs. Anyone run these on a full weight e92 M3? Should I be concerned? ..the 295/30's have a SL rating (1,477 lbs)

If you are full weight, that's 900 lbs per tire. I think you could easily get 600 lbs weight transfer under heavy breaking which means 1200 for each front. That's awfully close to the max.

Load rating is also an indication of the tire's ability to take heat. Heavier cars push down harder and that generates more heat.

I would definitely call your sales rep at Tire Rack and ask their opinion.

Right, that's my concern as well.

I will reach out to them for the sake of completeness. I was hoping to hear from someone here who tracked these tires in this size.

I've already decided to switch to a staggerd setup, with a 10" front and 11" rear wheel, with likely a 275/295 tire. As sticky as possible, but I need to be able to drive 120 miles (round trip) to my home track each time.

Any other tire recommendations? Hankook TD C30? R888R? - I've read mixed reviews on these.

In the past I've mainly used NT01's and Kumhos. I'd love to run the 305 NT01 but with a 35 profile, it isn't an easy fit.

That load rating is absolutely fine. The SL v XL isnt much of any concern unless running tires at max psi

The load rating on the 275/35/18 tires, which I would use on the front is LL, which is lower then SL. LL is 1201 lbs only, thus the concern.

FYI. Technically the LL is the load range and indicates at what tire pressure max load capacity is measured. SL and LL are 35psi. XL is 41 meaning you can run higher load by increasing the pressure.

The number preceding the LL is the actual load index and indicates how many pounds the tire can support.

Im sorry i misread. I would stay clear of ll but sl vs xl would be fine. Re71r comes in a 275-35 or go 295-30 in a re71r or sport cup2 are options. Or a nt01

I considered the re71r but 275 is the widest size for 18" wheels. I've run the NT01 275/35 square for the last 2-3 years and would like more grip in the rear.

The BFG R1 comes in a 265/285 and runs wide which would be perfect but I'm uncertain about driving on them to/from the track (120miles) each time.

I wouldn't drive any of the DOT slicks to/from the track. If you come across any water on the road (rain, sprinklers, etc.) you'll have no grip. Also those tires can only handle so many heat cycles and you'd be adding heat cycles just getting to and from the track.

Best to stick with > 100TW tires if you are driving them to the track IMHO.

I’ve been wanting to run 275/35-18 and 305/35-18 NT01 myself, but also concerned about squeezing the 305 rear. I think there was an E92 M3 that fit it on an 18x11” et44 Apex EC-7 with a 12mm spacer, -2* camber, and a little trimming of the seam. It would be an amazing setup if it fit.

I had a lengthy conversion with a Tire Rack rep and in the end, based on the vehicle GAWR of the front axle being 2249, he stated the Toyo RR 275/35/18 tire would be fine/safe. I'm likely to purchase these, but will probably carry them in the back seat in this fashion -> https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=656370

I'd only use these in dry weather. Given the limited number of heat cycles I will likely not drive on them to/from the track, which I was hoping to avoid...

Yes, here -> https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...1192408&page=3

I will be using the EC-7's as well, 18x10 et25 (f) and 18x11 et44 (r) with either a 12 or 15mm spacer. I'd just rather not have to modify the rear of the car at this time to fit the 305/35/18 NT01.

So he thought it was OK to exceed the load rating for brief periods of time (ie. hard braking)?

He did not speculate as to how much weight is transferred during hard braking, but the context of the conversation was "track only use."

Looking at the BFG R1 tire in the wider 18" sizes - which I know a couple of guys here run - they also have a LL rating...

Another option would be a 275/295 Toyo R888R, but I have read very mixed review about this tire.

I Have run those exact sizes, got rid of the tires before they got to cord due to being a very slow and bad tire. RE71r is faster around 2sec for me at my local tracks. I would not recommend running them, NT01 would be a better option.

Really? From what I have read, the RR's should have similar characteristics to the NT01's but provide more grip at the expense of longevity.

Can you elaborate on your experience?

Have you looked at the Yoko A052? They are just as fast as the RE-71R and they come in 265/35/18 and 295/35/18. One of the guys in the Bimmer Challenge Time Trial series I run in was winning his class in an M2 using those tires.

I have overlooked them due to the 200 treadwear rating. Additionally, I haven't come across any feedback on these tires and how they measure up against the popular DE tires.

I would like to try the A052s myself. But, for the record, Simon would be fast on anything!

Not a fan of them at all they just had bad characteristics and not a great tire to me at 100tw.I like the RE71 cause I use them for AutoX. What tracks do you run at just noticed you are in DFw. What Clubs do you run with? Maybe will see you around.

The A052's are installed. I ended up with 265/35/18 on a 10" wheel in the front and 295/30/18 on a 11" wheel in the rear.

The 265's are as wide as 275 NT01's and the 295's look to run a bit wide as well as they completely fill up the 11" wheel.
