This thread convinced me to buy an M5 shifter and do the retrofit. Started yesterday evening by removing the old shifter, separating the bottom ring base on both e92 and m5 shifter. I think like many others will take it to upholstery shop and have to glue up the leather to the base to make it as flush as possible. I think the hardest part so far was removing and cleaning the leather leftover from the M3 base.

I've read though this whole thread and didn't see anyone mention using the M5 knob in conjunction with a short shift kit. Anyone done that? I have the SSR SSK and am afraid, with this knob, shift effort might increase too much due to extra lost leverage.
Thanks

I don't suppose you still have the M5 boot frame handy? I was wondering if you still have it if you could measure it for me? I'm trying to see if it's a similar size to my F30 to see if it would fit! EDIT: I said F30 because I have one boot spare in my closet - but I want this for my F80 which is due in the next 2 months. If the boot is the right size, I can do the swap and get it all ready in advance of my delivery! Last edited by dinonz; 04-07-2016 at 07:02 PM.. |

Does anyone have the measurements to how far down you should go in the boot to mount the right so you make sure to leave enough room for play when shifting? Thank you!

The hardest part is getting the thing to clip back in hands down. It took me and another person to get it to go back in. My tip is just make sure any extra leather is trimmed off.

I had to remove the entire console to get mine to snap in. very easy to do once you have it removed. I was already planning to swap the change holder with the sunglasses holder anyways, so i knocked both out in one shot.

Got the M5 shift knob + boot set from ECS tuning
cut the boot about 1/2 inch all around, super glued to my e90 boot frame my electrical connection was acting kinda funny (the male and female end of connector), went to a car audio shop and had them just cut off the connector and connect wire + wire even with some heat shrink protections around the connection. These wires probably are copper and they are pretty fragile in cold weather, i think ~70 bucks well spent making sure it's connected properly. I guess I gotta stick to this shifter for a long time now... totally love the feel of the M5 shifter, noticeably short throw, weighted knob feels much better! gotta be my top 5 modifications!

Hi All - been reviewing this thread even before I bought my M3... Package arrived from ECS Tuning today. Total install took 2:30 hours.
Knob popped off in 2 minutes and I was feeling pretty cocky until it took me 50 minutes to uncouple the illumination connectors - some of the time was cursing that my fingers hurt, trying to wedge a small screwdriver and scrolling through "loosen car connector" searches. Finally got an eyeglass flathead screwdriver wedged under the female connector and over the male knob nub (what a sentence) to get it unlocked. Tested the M5 illumination, which was fine, and after a bit of panic was able to use the eyeglass screwdriver to release connectors. De-framing the boots took and looked the same as prior posters. I split the difference between gluing and stuffing, and using clips then duct taped the leather to the frame, still using the clips over the duct taped parts in case they came out. Cut the leather over the frame tabs, seemingly cut a lot at the front (dash) corners of the frame where the boot seams are. Positioned the knob over the stick, removed the clips and pushed down - took several tries to get all 4 tabs to click, but after popping down the knob, took a short drive. Definitely feels crisper, and weighted knob feels good in hand. Will help my shifting skills for sure. Lower height is noticeable, I can still rest my hand on the stick shift comfortably with the arm rest at full extension - if either the knob or arm rest were 1/2 " short it wouldn't have worked, som I'm lucky. Thanks to OP and all who completed this - highly recommend to make our M3s a little bit more "Ultimate" Cheers, |
