Could this be throttle actuators?

Hey guys, my ‘13 M3 will occasionally and randomly go in to limpmode. Can’t think of any constants when it does it. No other symptoms, car runs fine, limpmode goes away if I turn the car off then back on. Misfires on random cylinders. Anyone expirience something similar?

Hmmm....others may have more experience than I and can offer a better opinion. But you may need to consider a faulty TBA if the it occurs on the same bank repeatedly.

Yeah I’ve thought about that, but everything I see is saying it should have a code specific to the throttle actuators. Is it possible the actuators are going bad without a code?

What code reader are you using?

I"m of little help but from what I've read, your circumstances certainly sound like a TBA. I think the misfire code is often a coil pack(s). Might be worth checking.

Yeah the car is stuck in limp mode now. Tempted to just buy some new ones and see if that fixes it.

Myself and several others have received excellent service from Abdul@mpowermotorsports for rebuilt (and improved) TBA's. Plus since your car is ~7 years old I expect they may not last much longer (depending on the mileage, too)...so kind of a "no regrets" option if you plan to keep the car much longer, in my opinion.

I would suspect something else as your codes are more misfires. How old are plugs?

I wouldn't mess around with rebuilds. Just buy brand new from FCP Euro For lifetime warranty. Hassle free and no downtime with their warranty.

They have about 2000 miles on them.

If it is the actuators, you should see a 2B21 code. Otherwise check your coil packs. May want to try moving them to see if the codes move too.

So for anyone researching this with similar issues, it WAS infact the throttle actuators.

I cleared the misfire codes, car was still in limp mode. Scanned it again and it had no more misfire codes, but was throwing a DSC malfunction code. It never threw a code specific to the actuators. Replaced the actuators and it’s running like a champ now.

So I got the mpower motorsports rebuild TBAs too and shortly after install I’ve been getting an occasional entire bank misfire.

Did you have both TBAs replaced or just one?
Did you go back to OE or have them replaced under warranty?

I’ve got the same codes. I figured I’d have them both replaced under the warranty.
