Silver / Metallic Film in N52 Oil Pan
I'm in the process of repairing my N52 after it lost its VANOS exhaust cam adjuster bolts. I dropped the oil pan today to retrieve the sheared-off bolts and found a silvery substance in the bottom of the oil pan. The oil drained clean, but there is a few circular spots of it you can see below above the oil pool.
Here is a video as well: View post on imgur.com I have no idea what this could be from. Has anybody seen something like this before? It reminds me of anti-seize but much thinner consistency. The motor does have 175k and I believe this is the first time the pan has come off. |

I'd try posting over in the 3 series e9x forum. Much more experience with the N52 over there.
My guess though (assuming theres no metalic/metal flake appearance to it) is a type of oil additive.

That's exactly what I was thinking of but couldn't remember the name of it. Good call.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I meant to post on E90post and just didn't pay attention where I was.
I ended up separating out the oil filter and unfortunately found some little shrapnel of the VANOS bolts that sheared off. Looks like they got chewed up on their way down past the timing chain to the oil pan. While it looks like the filter did its job and caught everything, it's not exactly confidence-inspiring for this engine. |
