West Coast to East Coast...what to drive?

Alright...so July 25th I' starting my cross adventure from LA, CA to Destin, FL. I currently have a 2008 335i e90 and 2010 m3. I am planning on renting a Penske truck with a car hauler but I just can't decide on what car should be towed and which should be driven. I've also considered shipping one, but the cost is $1000+ and no fixed delievery date unless I pay more. My brother is flying out to do the trip with me so driving seperately may defeat the purpose of him coming....suggestions???? I realize people on here have made similar post, but I think this is a case by case basis.

-M3 has a warranty until 75k (at 55k)
-M3 has matte gray wrap
-335i has been returned to factory and has had extensive maintenance done recently (daily driver 100k miles)

I wouldn't drive that far with the wrap on the M3 so I would tow that one and make sure you protect the front end. That would be my deciding factor.

Also, I would see if anyone in your area installs ClearPlex, it's a film that goes on your windshield to protect it from rock chips, the film takes the damage, not your windshield. I would have that put on which ever one you choose to drive. We paid $200-$300 for it (forgot exactly) and IMO that's a great investment considering a new windshield is $1000+.

That will be quite a change for you! I've lived in both places. VERY different. If it were me I would ship the M3 or if that's not possible then haul it. Let the 335 (a more comfortable long distance car) do the drive.

I have the windshield film on the 335i, worth every penny as it has taken a beating! Also pondered the thought of shipping household goods, grabbing some walkie talkies, and making it one epic bro trip across country (scenic route).

Nola- I see your point on the wrap, but then again its just a wrap and I'm wondering how it will hold up in the humidty once in FL.

Rdoctor- Going home finally! What part of SC? Grew up in Pawleys Island... Thanks for the advice

Yes, that film is awesome lol. That bro trip doesn't sound bad either, could lead to trouble though lol.

The wrap should be fine in the humidty. I'm here in New Orleans where its just as bad and I don't see too many wrapped cars with issues here.

the wrap will be fine.

take the M3.

I wouldn't trust a 335 going cross country.

I don't even trust it when my mom goes to get groceries.

Everyone I know that's moved to Florida has throw away all their furniture. Just sell it at a garage sale, ship a few boxes of stuff and drive both cars.

I'm in Charleston now but lived in LA for almost 10 years. I've also spent a LOT of time in Destin. Good luck on your journey home.

isn't that sorta the point of the wrap? You destroy your wrap on the bumper and just rewrap it and not have to repaint it?

I find the M3 VERY comfortable and I bought mine for long distance trips, not coast to coast lol but I have to travel alot!

These cars are made to be driven.

M3, no question - take your time and find some incredible backroads to explore along the way.

Take lots of photos, write an epic trip journal, share on M3post.

He doesn't have a clear bra protection wrap, just a colored wrap. They don't protect and rocks will puncture them just as easy as paint.

For me, the deciding factor would be how you intend to make the trip. Are you planning on taking your time, seeing some sights, and allowing for flexibility in your route? Or are you more time-crunched - simply packing in the miles each day to get to your destination?

If you are doing the slower, more scenic option, M3, no question. You can cater the trip a little bit to the M3s abilities and enjoy the crap out of that car - that's what is made for! And it's extremely comfortable for long trips like this. When else would you have an opportunity like this to enjoy that car so freely?! Make an event out of it for sure!

If you are doing the quick option, don't waste all those warranty miles on the M3 for just a normal highway trip.

All my opinion of course. gl

I agree, for a scenic tour M3 is a must. I would do it myself if I were in your shoes.

I would take the M3 for the trip.
IMO cars are made it be driven...you'll enjoy M3 more than the 335i.
Enjoy....

Looking for a windshield film for the M3 now before I take the journey. My brother is flying out so he will drive the 335i. I'm doing the drive, final decision. Considering we are hitting the Grand Canyon, back roads to Flag Staff, Albuquerque, 287 to Dallas, and what ever else comes along, I think I would regret not taking the trip. I have about 5-6 days to do it, so if anyone has some sights worth seeing I'd appreciate the input.

Rdoctor- Love Chuck town man! My friends just graduated from MUSC this past May so I'm looking for valid excuses to go back (women aren't hard to look at there if you know what I mean).

Drive your M3

Wasn't there some m3post member who did that recently? Can't seem to find that post.
