Easy, because BMW can create M3/M4 variants with incremental enhancements and people will pay for them. It's easy to manipulate demand with an intense marketing campaign coupled with a limited quantity run.

Yeah, and even if so, I think of software changes as distinct from actual hardware upgrades.

Good point about the tires - that’s another place where features diverge.

Looking at the M4 CS interior again to refresh my memory, I can’t figure out why they decided not to go with the Alcantara bolsters for the M3 CS. I thought maybe the theme was carried into the rear seats and, because of differences between the coupe and sedan rear seats, they would have needed some unique Alcantara pieces for the M3 CS. But it looks to me like the M4 CS back seats are just black leather and identical to the standard black M4 seats. Maybe they thought sedan buyer would prefer all four seats to match? Even if so, I don’t know what would have been so hard about using Alcantara on the outer bolster surfaces of the rear seats on both cars.

The M3 CS is going to be particularly interesting. How much discount do you give for the lack of OLED lights? Plus, it misses out on the Alcantara seats which makes the whole thing look less the business and somewhat less cohesive to me. With that in mind, as a customer, I’d want to see an appreciably lower price. On the other hand, if you lower it to much, what message do you send to the potential M4 CS buyer? This is the potential conflict I pointed out when talking about this car in the past. Now, the winning play might be the limited edition aspect they have gone with. The M3 CS is going to be more rare and produced only for a short time compared to the M4 CS, so they probably figure they can re-up the asking price despite the missing content. Indeed, someone posted UK prices earlier and it seems they are only £3K apart.

BTW, there’s a pricing speculation thread here:

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1406613

And I’ll probably move these posts there.
Here's a M4 CS US pricing analysis I had made in another thread:

Add the CCB to the CS, and the as tested price would be ~105k compared to the $143k as tested price for the 911GTS, a whopping $38k more expensive.

Using the same methodology I used to establish Canadian pricing in post #39:

Using the base model as a reference, the premium for the CS is between 47.5%, 48.2% and 49.3%, putting the CS in the 99k to 101k USD range with a 100.4k median.

Since the "base" models come with different standard equipment depending of the local markets, I think it is better to compare to an equivalently spec'ed M4 DCT CP (all equipped with the same options). So the CS commands between 15.8%, 20.5% and 25.0% premium over that spec'ed Competition Pack, putting the CS between 92.5k and 99.8k USD with a 96.2k median.
  • In Germany: base=Eur 78,299, spec'ed CP=Eur 97,010, CS=Eur 116,900
  • In Switzerland: base=CHF 94,400, spec'ed CP=CHF 120,760, CS=CHF 139,900
  • In the UK: base=GBP 59,080 Lbs, spec'ed CP=GBP 69700, CS=GBP 87,150
  • In the USA: base=USD 67,700, spec'ed CP=USD 79,890, CS=USD 92k ~ 101k

As a tidbit, it is interesting to observe that folks in the US are getting a bloody good deal on the CP and Exec pack

Hm are you talking about these: f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1375733&page=6

The ones on this M3 CS look better (never liked those black line ones) but maybe it's just the angle/lighting
These lights:

Yeah I'm not seeing that. These ones on the CS aren't clear at all. We'll see

already given my pov on how much of a non event this whole CS thing is

no drivetrain changes apart from coding already being offered by an Ethernet cable, and now looking at the m3 cs, bmw didn't even bother making new door trims for it in that carbon cloth material

the m4 cs just landed in aus, and has every journo scratching their head why bmw is charging +100k for it, especially since our cars come with pretty much every option (excl. ceramics) standard

I'm torn with this car. I love everything about it but I don't think I could live with the dct transmission.

Still - the old school analogue controls bemuse me. Can still do single zone A/C with digital technology. My home is.

What about the price point? Could you live with that? I know it's an unknown quantity at this time but it's fair to say it will likely be somewhere between ~$100k and the GTS at ~$134k.

Interesting that you are so " bemused".....

Rotary controls are better for making an adjustment quickly (particularly in an automotive environment ) as opposed to repeatedly pushing or holding a button? Note that the idrive knob is a Rotary control knob - as are most other driving assistant type systems from other manufacturers..

As an audio/video van.. I saw both car audio head units and also home audio go from the rotary volume knob to digital buttons or sliders.. but you know what's most common today again? The rotary volume knob.... don't sweat the technique!

You might want to look at other suppliers - IND are good, but not the cheapest - not by a long shot. You can get that OEM hood for under $4K, plus shipping, and $500 or so to paint... but having said that, I'm looking to IND for several parts for my next build...

it was a global enough car to warrant bmw building them in both lhd and rhd

I currently have rotary knobs each side for adjusting temperature in my M3 - what are you driving if you don't? A Civic?

I agree totally - rotary knob for the function used 99% of the time. As for the rotary knob for selecting the air vents, no. Digital is great for that. Especially being able to turn each one on and off as desired, not just having a "4 option selection" on a rotary dial.

Obviously not global enough for them to warrant working with the backwards US regulations.

It's written in the press release:

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels of the first-ever BMW M3 CS via the proven 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic.
