Error Code 5E34

Hello friends,

I've been living with this DSC Malfunction: Start off Assistance Inactive! error message for over 2 years now since it doesn't seem to have any effect on anything other than an annoying light. I finally ordered the Bavarian Technic cable this week which spit out the error code:

5E34
DSC: Control module: longitudinal-acceleration sensor
Error will cause a warning light
Error is currently present
Test conditions have been completed

Is this a problem with the speed sensor (PN 34 52 6 781 575)? Does anyone have a diagram of where this is? I've read it may be under one of the seats.

Number 11 in the diagram

I'm reasonably handy and plan to replace myself but any info you may have will be really helpful. I also plan to create a DIY to post here as I couldn't find one for this problem.

Thanks!

- Mike

"Longitiudinal acceleration" implies a G-meter, not necessarily anything to do with speed. There are low-cost ICs that measure g-forces that are commonly used in many consumer devices these days. It appears that BMW utilizes lateral G's in combination with other factors to apply its Dynamic Stability Controls, similar to what most other vehicle stability controls are doing. Doesn't mean you've picked the wrong sensor, but I would expect it to be called an acceleration sensor rather than a speed sensor. There is also an "accelerating sensor" used for airbag deployments (to confuse matters more!).

thanks.

This feature is what keeps your car from rolling back after you let go of the brake on an incline. Not sure where it's at or if that's the item that needs to be replaced.

FYI it was the speed sensor (cluster) that was the problem. I found it hiding under the drivers seat, under a painted piece of the body, just forward of the under seat speaker. Relatively easy replacement, just had to disconnect the battery to avoid airbag BS, remove the drivers seat (but not the wiring harness, just leaned it back), remove the under seat speaker cover (no need to remove the speaker), pull the carpet and some of the foam away, remove the three bolts on the bracket and wiggle it out towards the front of the car. It must come out forward because of the way the wiring harness fits on it.

I smashed the old sensor open with a hammer (glued closed) as it was just a dumb circuit board so really no way to figure out wtf happened in there, although I can't really think of a worse place to stick electronic sensors due to risk of getting wet through the carpet on rainy or snowy days.

Bought mine off ebay for $160.

So I saved myself -

Dealer diagnostics minimum: $100
Dealer parts: $640
Dealer labor - quoted 3 hours LOLZ (literally will take you 30 mins or less now that you know where it is): 3x$140/hr = $420
Dealer shop supplies shake down fee: Maybe $40

TOTAL DEALERSHIP RIP OFF would have been $1200+tax!

Dam I deserve a beer.

Hope this can help someone else some day.

Hi Mike,

I am currently having the same problem with you. though my car is a 325i e92 with the same Error Code 5E34

initially I had the 3 warning lights flashing yellow brake light, ABS, traction. Went to the mechanic and they fixed the ABS and traction warning light by fixing the ABS pump #1 on your diagram.

but still 1 light Remains which is the yellow brake light. we tried to replace part #2 on your diagram but it did not work. now my best bet is to get the part #11(PN 34 52 6 781 575)

I was hoping you could guide me. also planning to do this myself now since I have spent about $1500 to figure out what is wrong with it. going to different mechanics.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Dealing with the same issue now. Yellow brake light on the cluster
