Mods That Gone Too Far Down the Road

At what point does modding represents going too far down the road from a performance, resell value and overall objective point of view.

For example, is it better to buy and mod a M3 costing $125K ($85K base cost and another $40K of mods) or just buy a Porsche 911 GTR3 for $125K?

At what point personally do you start thinking too many mods?

I feel that even if I bought the 911 gt3rs I would have modded it anyway... its hard for me to keep a car stock.. likely impossible lol

Everyone's objectives are different. You should define yours ahead of time and continually re-assess...that way you won't go "too far down the road" so to speak.

I am having this kind of dilemma right now with my C63 and the new 991 GT3. do I spend money on mods (Super charger, widbody etc.) or do I trade in on the P-car!

Most people have this same problem with home improvements versus buy another home too!

lets say i get 100k, i would rather buy a 80k car and spend the 20k to mod it. Not to buy a 100k car and drive it stock

Personally, I would go with the Porsche GT3 if the price of mods and base car is 75% of the GT3. But that's me.

umm, no they dont. How can you compare a supercharger vs. renovating a kitchen or a bathroom??? The latter will generally recoup 90 to 100% of your investment depending on what market you live in.

Well, it happened to me. The costs of a kitchen re-do in my old home was not worth $125,000. So we sold the old house and bought new with the kithen we wanted in a better neighborhood. Made a big profit on the old and bought early in a new development at lower price compared to my neighbors 3 years later.

right place, right time...all good. generally speaking though, to put $50k into a kitchen reno vs. selling a home and moving just to upgrade a kitchen...prob gonna cost you more than the $50k.

If i put $50, 60k into a kitchen reno and expansion on my current home...as i'm currently considering, i'll get that back and then some when i go to sell.

I agree with your comment on the home improvement costs benefits / resell value. But what about cars? Clearly the car will depreciates regardless of mods added. Also, I just think modding is so short term until we decide to move on. I believe most M3 owners would rather own the Porsche GT3 instead if money wasn't an issues between the two cars long term.

But seriously, it's all relative. IMO, it's the point where the car is more hassle to drive and maintain everyday than what the mods give you in value. For me, it's spending up to about 1.5% of the sticker value of the car.

I would agree...cars and mods are depreciating assets. Anyone who builds an M3 thinking they will recoup all of their money or even a large portion is sadly mistaken.

That said, modding is what many of us love to do.... GT3 as is, probably a more sound purchase than an M3 plus $40k....at least from a resale perspective.

I don't see the connection since the M3, no matter how modded, is not comparable to a GTR3. They are entirely different animals and suit completely different needs. Since the OP has not outlined his goals and objectives it's really impossible to objectively respond.

The OP stated a question for the reader to answer because he wanted your opinion.

"At what point personally do you start thinking too many mods?"

So far only one reponse was given which was 1.5% of the sticker price.

BTW, Mdosu, thank you.

GT3 for sure. On top of it one of the most badass cars ever made, I think there's more value in a $125k car than there is an $80k car with $45k in mods.

Not sure the GT3 really needs much in the way of mods. Unless you are one hell of a driver that car is more than most anyone can really leverage.

Another thing to consider is I don't think you can lose on the GT3. The new 991 GT3 has not been well received by the enthusiast market and I think the 997 GT3 will hold its value well.

honestly, i personally dont think there is a set amount of value that defines too much mods. everyone has different taste and how they define what is too far and what is not. for me personally, i see my M3 as a endless money pit... no matter what kind of mod i add i dont think ill be satisfied... cuz if i add BBK's today, by tomorrow or the next day, im gonna want to add a supercharger, then new wheels, then seats, steering wheels, wing, diffuser... haha

Personally, I wouldn't spend over $7000
