Just had my local shop install a new ESS-VT1 550 S/C kit. First, from a performance standpoint, the kit works great - no complaints. I do have one minor, but very annoying issue. I am getting a buzzy whining sound through my front dash that sounds like it is being fed through the dash mounted speaker. Has anyone else experienced electrical interference from a supercharger install? The sound is driving me nuts, and no, it is not the standard supercharger whine. Drop me some thoughts as to what it might be and/or thoughts on ways to address it. Thanks.

Does it rise and fall with rpm? Does it come through the speakers only when the radio is on? Check all the ground connections in the engine bay and connections on the battery. Did you install any other electronics or gauges?

It changes tone a little when the idle changes. I can make the tone change slightly by gently tapping the throttle, but it doesn't get louder/softer with acceleration. Just a constant low volume whine from around the speaker. No change when I turn up/down the stereo either (or on/off). It sounds like a kind of resonant hum / constant high pitched radio static. No gauges installed or other electronics.

Me too. And it is driving me nuts. I tried pulling the fuses for the stereo to see if that worked...it didn't. I also tried pulling the leads off the amp, disconnected the iPod connection, etc to remove variables...no change. I may need to pull the front speaker out to be sure that is the source. There are so many new noises under the hood that I can't be sure it isn't some sort of resonant frequency causing something to generate a high frequency buzz inside the dash. My shop (Topspeed Motorsports) also volunteered to try and manufacture a quick and dirty grounding kit to see if that helps...may need to take them up on it if I can't find an alternate solution.

Yeah constant hum that only changes slightly with leaf def sounds like a grounding issue. Hope topspeed's solution works!

So, today I removed the front speaker to try and isolate the sound. No luck. While it sounds like a whine/buzz through the speakers, it turns out it isn't. Maybe some sort of resonant vibration through the firewall...injector whine?

Sounds like the supercharger is touching something. The clearances are very tight. I would look around the SC and the bracket and make sure its not touching part of the car (body of the car). Some areas to look are around the SC next to the wheel well and between the SC and the hood. Check the hood for signs of contact from the SC. Also, the coolant line should have been shifted lower in the engine bay. If it wasn't the SC could be riding on it.

Thanks. I will look. Definitely not the hood, as the sound is still there with the hood fully open.

I found the source of the whine inside the cabin. Turns out, the bypass hose was the culprit. I used a mechanics stethoscope to trace the source of the noise. It was coming from the drivers side strut tower brace. I noticed that the bypass hose had been tie wrapped to the strut tower brace to keep it from moving around. I thought there was no way it could be from the hose, but I snipped the tie wrap and let the bypass hose drop. Much to my surprise, the noise went away. For anyone trying to trace a noise or squeak, I will say the mechanics stethoscope was well worth the $15 it cost to buy one. That noise was driving me mad!

And a pic of the source/problem, in case it helps anyone in the future.

FYI that's not the best install to zip tie the hose to the strut brace as movement would def wear the tie wrap through. It also looks bad having it like that. Good that you fixed it though!
