Talk me off the ledge...e90 M3 -->F10 M5?

So an F10 M5 is in my future for sure...the questions is when and, if sooner than later, does it come at the expense of my e90 M3?

I've set a goal of getting an F10 M5 to coincide w/ a career goal. It's a bit of a "reward" to myself, delaying gratification, character building, all that good stuff. Everything was on track until this past weekend when I saw a 2013 M5 for an incredible deal. The local BMW dealer is asking about $29k for it, but it has 108k mi on the clock. Clearly, too many miles. Still, never having driven one and looking to convince the wife that the M5 is my next vehicle, we drove to the dealer, jumped in the car and test drove it. Sure, it was raining so I didn't get a chance to really put it through it's paces but I came away very impressed. I was most impressed by the condition of the vehicle. To say it was clean would be an understatement. It turns out that it was a 1 owner car, leased twice by the same guy (a 60 year old fella), who commuted nearly 2 hrs daily. All service done by the BMW dealer. Seats and steering wheel were particularly clean, which was impressive for a car w/ so many miles. Obviously, it's completely different than my e90M3, but at age 41, I can't help but feel like, I'm more M5 than I am M3.

So fast forward to the question - Although the M5 above may NOT be the right one for me, it got me thinking, should I sell the e90 M3 so that I can make a play for a 2014 comp pkg M5? Or, stick w/ the original plan which is to wait 2-3 years, hit my career goal and then pick up a nicer, lower mileage, newer F10 M5 w/ comp pkg, and potentially keep my e90 as well?

For the record, my M3 is a pretty well sorted, nicely spec'd garage queen so I would likely ask for more than current market value (making a quick sale kind of unlikely). I think I know my answer (stay the course, stick w/ the plan) but wanted to post the question here.

Has anyone here made that switch? e9x M3 to F10 M5? Does anyone have both?

My brother has a 2015 F10 M5, and I have driven it on several occasions. It's definitely a more comfortable and powerful car. Personally though I would keep the E90 especially since this is going to be a weekend/fun car. For a weekend car I prefer a more raw/mechanical feeling experience, which I believe that the E9x delivers on.


That's just my 2 cents. The F10 is a great car, I just think of it as more of a daily driver.

That's just my 2 cents. The F10 is a great car, I just think of it as more of a daily driver.

The previous owner of the F10 clearly labeled it as such (a daily driver)...2 hr commute!

Look at the contemporary E63 if you want the same powerrfrrrrrrrrr experience with a little more engagement IMO. The W212's steering in particular is so much better

Maybe the Competition Package is different, but none of the F10's I've driven have felt like they wanted to play. Fast yeah but there's something about them that just feels meh. Rocket boosters can make a lot of situations more fun than they have any right to be, see eg X5M

I will never sell my E90M. I've driven it back-to-back with a lot of stuff lately, shopping for fun and for Wifebot, and nothing has been better. We ended up in a 2015 E63 S for her and while I LOVE the car and it's the first car of hers I've had that I think would be worth keeping until they stop drilling for oil, I still like my car better to drive both enthusiastically and in traffic/boring errands it's just a happier, friendlier, lower-stress car that can still surprise me and put a grin on after almost 9 years and 114,000 miles. There is no shortage of cars that can give you speed and power and luxury. There IS a critical shortage of whatever IT is that the E90M has, and in sedan form anyway, IT has vanished from the market completely. If you think there's a chance you'll ever miss that, don't sell yet.

I also DD my pickup truck when there's salt on the ground, but otherwise, the E90M gets driven for everything. My opinion, now matter how special it's till just a car, if it gets crashed or worn out get another one, why waste time not driving something you love (unless you love driving the prius, which some people do, it can be fun if you like that kind of thing)

Are you smoking crack? The E9X M3's are the last of the naturally aspirated V8's. You'll buy an F10 only to see it depreciate under what our cars will soon be worth. All that, plus, do you really want a boring car like the F10 M5 when you could have everything the M3 has to offer? The F10 is a couch surfing Dyson of an M car whereas the M3's still have some rawness to them.

As a weekend car, I think the e90m is the more involving choice. Mine is a part-time weekend car as well that I drive about 2k annually.

How about an M3 and a 2 seat sports car?

Just wait until the 2 years so you can keep both, pretty sure you'll find a better and lower mileage M5 down the road, you've gone this far without one 2-3 years won't hurt eventually you'll get it.

My E92 M3 is boring compared to my late E36 M3. Car felt so much quicker off the line and torquey because it was nearly 250kg lighter yet with 321hp. That being said it had OS Giken Superlock LSD and Recaro race seats... E92 feels a lot more planted on corners.

I would wait till you hit your career goal and buy a F90 M5. Better in all aspect. If you kept you E90 you can argue it's preferable due to NA/sound and etc, but in 2-3 years picking up an old F10 when there will be plenty of F90 on the used market does not make sense.

M5 for DD.
M3 as weekend toy.

M3 will not depreciate much from here. So while its not an "investment" you wont lose much money either.

After owning both, you decide to sell the M3 then do it. But this way you get a "trail period" with both cars.

Both are excellent motorsports engines. F10 M5 is too big for me.

In an ideal world BMW would have offered a production Z4 coupe with 4.4L V8, be it a S65 or S63...
