I would rather spend a couple more and get a base M2.

Honda invitet to a test drive when the car came out. Thought what the heck, maybe time to come out of the cave and upgrade to something designed in modern days. The reviews has obviously been fantastic. Car drives great, Im sure twice as fast at half the mpg and all the rest of it. Still, not near having the soul, and realized I passed the age. Still exciting car though!

The thought of constantly having to explain to people why its cool and not just a Civic kind of kills it for me. No doubt a fun way to get around tho.

It’s like explaining how your M3 is not a 328i. Type R to regular Civic is the same.

Had a little more time to swallow this one today and think I can come up with a stronger comment... the thought of giving someone my e92 M3, writing a check for $7k and then walking away with a souped up Civic kind of sounds like...well, the worst idea ever.

There. Fixed it for ya!
The e92 m3 is as related to the 328i as the CTR is to Civic LX.

For track use, the Civic Type R has overheating issues. I don't see it being reliable on track without extensive cooling upgrades.

Last track day I went to at Buttonwillow had 4 Civic Type Rs in various states of tune.. None of them could last more than a few laps without overheating even with upgraded intercoolers and radiators.

Drag racing an E92 M3 with a first gen NSX is apples and oranges. Of course you'll win. The NSX wasn't built for acceleration or straight line speed.

And if it was a newer one... well then the other guy didn't know you were "racing".

I am entertaining the idea of selling my 11 zcp 6mt for one as my daily driver. I know the obvious FWD vs RWD difference. Also, the CTR is not exactly attractive, but it’s suppossed to be lots of fun to drive.

I have read great things about it and the MPG is much higher for my 70 mile daily commute. Also, new car warranty and reliability that should be superior after the warranty expires compared to the m3.

I am currently frustrated with my m3, since the HVAC evaporator recently failed and needed replacement which was over $2k and I replaced the TAs and refreshed the brakes among other things shortly after buying my m3. I have not replaced the RBs but know it's a must if I want to thoroughly enjoy the car with worrying about failure each time I rev it to redline. However, I love the sound of the s65 as it sucks down fuel daily. LOL

I found a dealer that will sell the CTR $1k over sticker and my m3 is probably worth $30k max (55k miles). That is $7k plus taxes I need to come out of pocket.

FYI, I do not track my car and just commute and like to have fun at legal speeds. However, I read the CTR would smoke an e90/92 on a road course.

Fun to drive and reliability are my primary goals. Personally, I don’t think the CTR is that bad looking, but compared to the m3 it is ugly.

Unbiased thoughts?

Similar tiers no doubt. But never personally had to make that explanation.

That may be true, but I would argue the 328i is an objectively better car in almost every way compared to a Civic LX. With that in mind, if we boil it down to 'souped up base model' the BMW still comes out ahead. If I was faced with choosing between a Civic LX and a 328i, there is no doubt in my mind which one I would pick.

Exactly. 'M3' is a recognizable brand in and of itself, even to many non-enthusiasts. The M3 has more racing pedigree and well-earned prestige in my mind - it is and has been the benchmark in its class for decades. The CTR, regardless of how incredible it is, still has the 'souped up Civic' title in most people's minds. I'm not saying that title is deserved, but I can certainly understand having to do some extra explaining to people...

Different price points. It should be better.

Of course it should be, and it is. So then we agree that it would in fact be a bad idea to give up a 'souped up 328i' for a 'souped up Civic', especially with a $7k check on top for a car that starts at a lower price point.

Different cars with different personalities. Not apples to apples
Some occasions I would do the swap.
Others I wouldn't/ The answer is unique to every individual.

Pesonally, I would rather get an ek/eg civic hatchback with k20 swap and a turbo. It will be like a little go kart, damn fun to drive.

Do what you want OP - if you like it, get it! But... since you asked for opinions man that is really not one of the best looking cars out there. Saw one on the streets for the first time today and it looks like Bumblebee hate f@#*ed a CRX and this showed up nine months later.

I’m sure there are plenty of people that think the same thing about the M3, and they’re not wrong. That’s assuming they even notice it’s a bit different.

To be honest, I reckon the current Civic Type R needs less explaining than an F80

THIS. I definitely like the CTR for what it is but I feel like i've passed the age where I would have been in the target market for one.
