Consumption on the RL 5w50 really has dropped to near-zero. I won't go lighter than this now that I have the BE bearings in given their recommendation and the slight increase in clearance.

My car now has 110,000 miles on it. Bearings were changed after a spike in lead on the oil analysis on two successive changes, at 102,500 approximately, and I've had two changes since then with no consumption at all. Going to run this change to my usual interval of 6-7k miles and see what it does.

I am no longer a 0w40 Mobil 1 fan after dealing with the consumption. It may not hurt anything, but it's annoying, and I'd rather spend the extra money on the oil than have to top up the oil every 2,000 miles.

YMMV
I've also chose to use 5w-50 but from Amsoil.
0 consumption (I change every 5000)
Even after 3 track days and 5000 miles of daily driving.

I mean redline is bad for our engine. I changed my bearings and after 15000km they looked like sh..t. Was using RL 10-60.

You opened up and changed RBs again after 15k km? Some more info here would be interesting mate!

He may also have an engine with poor tolerance stack. When he changed bearings did he use extra clearance?

RL 10w60 is too thick - 5w50 is closer

I will also add that Redline 10w60 is too thick. It made the car rev very slowly and you can feel the car working hard when driving to keep the oil moving. It bothered me so much I drained the oil with just a few thousand miles on it. Went back to BMW 10w60 and it was much smoother.

Not saying Redline oil is bad. But if you are using Redline, use a lighter weight.

10w60 = 5.8 HTHS
I mix 6:3 with 5w50 (HTHS 5.0)
For a blend of 5.53 HTHS
My '13 ZCP loves it

I'm using Redline 5w50 in my engine, after not being happy with oil consumption on Mobil 1 0w40 or Redline 5w40. The 5w50 has exhibited comparable consumption to Castrol 10w60 on my car.

The specs are available for anyone with the brains to find them. My car has BE rod bearings, installed 8000 miles ago.

In case anyone can't read.

Just kidding this will still be messed up by somebody, somehow.

who did you get your rod bearings done by? i was thinking about bavarian @ machnester/ucity. heard the be bearings were better/more spec'ed for 10w60, glad to hear 5w50 is working well for you still. oddly enough RL also sells a 15w50, which is thicker at cold and thinner at hot than 5w50.. bizzare

15w50 was a popular oil weight for high performance tuned cars and older cars which burned oil. Mobil 1 also makes such a oil weight. I don't believe it was ever originally spec'd by any manufacturer for a production car.

I used Bimmers R Us. First time I've ever used them. I think I was just under $3k for everything (they supplied gaskets and sealing goo, I supplied bolts and BE bearings).

I like Bavarian but I haven't used them since I had them do a clutch on my E46 328 like a hundred years ago

I will run another blackstone on this change (going to change it when it asks for oil, probably in like 500-1000 miles so 5000-5500 on the oil). Blackstone on the last change after about 3500mi on the 5w50 was zero lead for the first time in the car's history.

I'm curious now about main bearings and whether they're shedding any lead. That first longer run on the oil after the BE's suggests they're either fresh out of lead to wear off in any of the spots it's been wearing, or not wearing significantly over that (shortish) amount of running, assuming the rods accounted for almost all of the average 6-8ppm over the first 90k miles, then 20-21ppm for two samples right before the bearings were changed

And how, again, did your engine overheat

Wow, didn't see that one but maybe you didn't post here. Like 330 says, do you know where the heat came from? Rod shells where toast after 15k km? What happened here?
