wtf BMW $440 for out of warranty oil change?

Couple of days ago my 09 e90 showed service due light. My current milage is 39000 miles. I checked the control and it was due in for oil service. My warranty ended last year and it was going to be my first out of warranty service so I didn't know what to expect. I knew they were going to overcharge but I thought how much more expensive could it be... dealer was on my way to work and I didn't feel like searching for a shop to do an oil change. Also with a loaner I thought it would save a lot of hassle.

So I SA gave me a run down of the services that were due and the price.
I was shocked.
For oil service I was quoted $440.27.
Intake silencer $199.28
and Fuel Service which is included in oil service I guess.
Total coming out to $649.95

I asked what this oil service included and why it was so expensive and he said it was an oil change and it was expensive because M3 oils are different.
I was so outraged I forgot to ask what the intake silencer was for and what this fuel service was for...

What are the services that are normally due at 40k miles? Is there anything special being done that warrants this kind of price? What am i missing?

Any advice and information would be much appreciated.

Holy cow! What a bunch of lowlife crooks! The M3's oh so special oil is Castrol TWS 10w60 which is about $15 per litre, and the engine takes just under 9 litres for a full oil change. The filter I get it for $50 in Canada but in the US i think it's as cheap as $20 or so. So really, you're looking at about $150 or so in parts maximum. Labor isn't all that difficult. I do it myself. It's just removing 2 drain plugs to empty the sump, unscrewing the oil filter cap to replace the filter and rubber O-rings, then screwing everything back on and filling it up with oil. No way in hell that would cost $250 in labor.

No idea what an intake silencer or fuel service is. I'm guessing they just dump some fuel system cleaner into the fuel tank and replace the air filter?

The required services are in the owners manual.

Last month at my local dealer with a BMW CCA discount I purchased 10 liters of TWS for $124.60 (12.46 per liter) and a filter at $20.86. Total $145.46

EAS has the kit with everything you need for $135-ish. I then bring it to a local engine oil place and they do it for like $15-20 with the products from EAS. Like other poster said, 2 drain oil plugs plus oil filter cap. I did do an oil change at the dealer during dead of winter, charged me $166(and I think they made a mistake). Second time I called, they wanted $250. Lol.

The San Antonio BMW dealer did my last oil change for less than $120 with a service coupon.

That's a bit much. We charge $175 for the service in total.

Well this is kind of on you taking it to BMW for an oil change. Any indy shop could have managed it at a fraction of what you paid.

I have an E92, so make sure you get the right kit if different than an e92.

I am going to save you over 300 dollars.

http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2219719/ This is all it should cost you. This is the lowest price and a company you can trust and they package everything you need for the oil change.

Do it yourself...I did mine 3 months ago...simple. Instruction video below...

Would getting the oil change at a reputable indy still show up on the service records? If you get it done apart from BMW can't they say you didn't follow proper service guidelines if you have an extended warranty?

I have a log book with receipts for the M3 even though I don't have an extended warranty. This includes receipts for parts, mileage logs, receipts for work(at indy shop or dated self work). It helps when you are selling and also or overall work log.

That's ridiculous! My local dealership only charges a couple hundred. Like others have mentioned, try local indy shops or find another dealership.

No, it won't show up in BMW's system. My BMW EVP booklet says that it must be performed at an authorized BMW center or else they don't consider that to be "proper maintenance".

Also, why is the OP not posting in this thread anymore?

I believe the intake silencer is the intake filter.

i'm pretty sure that would be illegal. they can't force you to do your maintenance at a dealership under threat of voiding warranty unless they have a very good reason for it. and saying an independent mechanic cannot handle the simple task of removing a couple of drain plugs and pouring oil into the engine and that this isn't "proper maintenance" isn't sufficient.

Highway Robbery, as my father would say. M oil change special in our neck of the woods runs at $180 (pre-tax) and I use the dealer for non-warranty mid cycle oil changes.

Why is it illegal?

They're not voiding the warranty if you don't service it at the dealer, they simply won't fix anything that breaks as a result of you taking it elsewhere. For example, if your indy mechanic puts the wrong diff fluid in and it blows up, why would BMW pay for that?

If you want me to post the exact verbage I can dig up the EVP booklet.

you didn't mention anything about putting the wrong oil in. you said that the mere act of taking it to an indie shop for an oil change is considered improper maintenance which implies potential denials of warranty coverage.
