Total loss

So my car was hit and was considered total loss by insurance company. I have option to buy the car back for only 5k less from the insurance company. Considering these motors are no less than 8k anywhere although mine does have 108k on it. Seems like no brainer to buy it back. What u guys think? Anyone looking for a motor? And other parts? Only really has megan racing cat back. But the motor alone seems worth it especially if my friend will pull it cheap.

$7K for the running wreck? Seems reasonable given a diff, tranny and engine sale should cover that. Then there are all the other bits and bobs that can be sold. if you have a friend that can help part it out, it seems more than reasonable.

Any photos of the damage?

Cheers,

put up some pictures....what part of the car was damaged? front, back, side? if you have the time then you could easily part it out and make money back.

Everyone always parrots this idea of buying it back, but no one ever seems to consider the logistics of storing said wrecked car, disassembling it and storing the parts, then disposing of whatever is left.

It is a HUGE undertaking that needs a lot of dedicated space, time, tools, and know-how.

Leave it on the front lawn next to the rusty pickup and broken refrigerator?

Well, this is not the kind of thing where you'll have the car in your garage for a few weeks and then be done with it. Even if you get a buyer for the motor right away, the shell could sit there for MONTHS while you slowly disassemble it and sell the parts. Plus, where do you plan on putting all of the parts you remove?

You'd really need a big garage or some sort of separate storage locker off-site.

I'd rather take the check and run.

Yup, tons of logistics. He did mention he had a friend that might pull the engine cheap so I assumed he had some space (assumption is unwise so my bad).

Pull out all of the expensive bits in a couple days and then recycle the rest at a wrecker is a quick and dirty way I have done it before (wreckers around me at the very least will pay you for salvage by weight). Diff, exhaust, tranny and engine should easily sell for more than $7K total. After that, any money you get for the shell is just a bonus. The more time you take, the more money you can make (up to a point) but you need the space.

But if you do not have space, than take the $$ and run away.

I wouldn't do it. Even if you can make a few grand on parts it isn't worth it. Your time is more valuable than this

Have to wonder if the the major components - engine, diff , tranny sustain subtle damage in the wreck that causes them to fail prematurely in the new car.
