Throttle Actuator replacement
My car would occasionally go into limp mode after I start it when the engine is still warm from the previous trip. Now it's going into limp mode every time I start the car again when the engine is still warm.
I scanned with Carly and shows: CDC0 - Throttle value actuator CAN message 2B57 - check at lower top 2B21 - Predriver check throttle valve actuator Looks like I need to replace the throttle actuators. The car is a 2010 with 146,000km on it. Anyone in the GTA has experience with replacement? Follow up Aug 5, 2017: Ordered two actuators from the States and DIY. Cost $1,700 CDN all in + time of course. See post 24 below.

Consider purchasing from FCP, they have a great warranty and competitive price.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/M3...48&m=20&page=1 Sucks that our CAD currency is quite weak but might be an option? Otherwise, several good local indys that can help you such as Rocco @ RMP. http://www.rmpmotors.com/

i just had to do this... just go to the dealer and bite the bullet. the car is worth it.
i then sold my old actuators (only one was faulty) and made $600 or so back since its worth it for guys to get them and rebuild them in advance.

Don't bother rebuilding, even those have failed. Order from FCP Euro and DIY it. It's simple. Totally not worth paying a dealer as they'll likely charge $1500-$2k per actuator replacement and there are two...

Just did this. Got my replacement parts from Turner as even after FX and duties/taxes, it was significantly cheaper than BMW Canada parts department.
I also wondered if this actually needed to be done as the error would solve itself after turning the car on or off multiple times. However - with each day, it got worse and worse and since the repair, it's been perfect. |

Hmm understandable. But the new ones are the same ones right? Or did they update the part. If they didn't, then why pay full price if you can just change gears for like, 1/4 of the price. |

Not sure if the P/N was ever revised. Given FCP's lifetime warranty on all parts I'd buy it from them and never have to pay for another one when/if it fails in the future.

Started getting the limp mode and actuator bank 1 code earlier this summer... I'll need to do something about it soon. I ordered the electronic chips that seems to be burning out on the board... now I need to order the replacement gears before I tear into it... But I'm wondering if I should just pull the actuators, and check them out before going further...
Worst part is, I sent an email with picture of the codes and a problem description to my dealer, they said they never seen that problem. Even they're master machanic seemed puzzled and suggested that it might be something else...! This is probably a load of crap but worth saying, some dealer just won't help. Also, the warranty extension that seems to exist in the states, don't seem to exist here in Canada... Side note, is there any canadian dealer who carry replacement gears? Or they need to come from Ebay or Great Britain?

The problem is that they fail for two reasons. One is faulty gears that wear out and cause the failure. The second is the motherboard fries and renders the part useless, even if the gears have been replaced.

Throttle Actuator Replacement
I replaced both actuators on my E92 M3. The first replacement on bank 1 was costly. The second, not so much. I actually helped with the install on the second Actuator on bank 2. It was a great experience.
So, if I may chime in....in my opinion, the boards on the actuators fail if the plastic gears break apart in what I imagine is a violent event where the debris damages the board. I have seen the actuator circuit board, they are well made and fairly resilient. If caught in time, the board may be salvaged. I would not buy two actuators. Albeit speculation, the second actuator Is probably salvageable. Additionally, the second actuator can be replaced later, though most folks and mechanics will implore you to do both as the cost to remove the plener and electrical wiring harness can be time consuming and therefore costly. A new actuator may cost between $1500 to $1700CAD If you want to know more.... let me know. I have pics when my second actuator was installed. I just do not want to bore anyone here with details. Also i will share with you how I saved a small fortune. |

I had mine done at only 75,300km - BMW Toronto quoted me almost $5k to do one bank (#2) but I took it to Rocco at RMP and he was great - $2K +tax - highly recommend him.

They're now about $550 USD each. I got two shipped to an address near the border, which I'm gonna pick up. With the exchange, it came to $1,500CAD for two. Expect to pay another 6% and 13% at the border.

Thik are you on the original bearings if you don't mind me asking?
My Bank 1 actuators have been replaced last year at 50,000km. Bank 2 is sending me warnings. Going to FCPEuro to price match getbmwparts and order an actuator. |

I haven't changed my rod bearings. I'm leaning towards not to.
