Malaysian slush funds, Pras from the Fugees, and an M3

Today I was doing some interior detailing on my 2008 E90 when the manual fell onto the floor of my garage. When I picked it up, a couple sheets of paper were popping out of the flap in the front. These turned out to be the previous owner's temporary registration (listing a DC address), voter ID card (from DC), and a couple other miscellaneous documents. Out of curiosity, I googled the previous owner's name, one George Higginbotham.

I'm not sure if any of you is familiar with the ongoing 1MDB scandal... before today I know I had seen a couple headlines here and there, but definitely wasn't too well-versed. In a nutshell, a wealthy Malaysian businessman embezzled a huge amount of money out of a Malaysian government owned economic development fund, and was systematically funneling said cash into the US to influence elections and policy via 2 contacts...Pras Michel from the Fugees, and a DOJ official. The DOJ official has pleaded guilty to several charges related to this ongoing enterprise, Pras maintains his innocence.

After matching up the age from the voter ID and the signature from the registration to the PDF of the plea agreement available from DOJ, I confirmed that the previous owner of my M3 was in fact the very same George Higginbotham of 1MDB malfeasance fame.

What's the significance of any of this? Not much. I just feel like my car is that much cooler now that it's linked to a matter of international intrigue...no matter how tenuous the link. I like to picture George and Pras exchanging millions of dollars in dirty cash in the front seat of my car in some nondescript parking garage in Georgetown while listening to Ghetto Supastar. Just thought I'd share!

As a Malaysian I believe that your M3 was originally purchased with 1MDB funds. I shall be writing to my govt to add it to the list of property to be recovered and returned to my country. 😂
