This is driving me nuts. 2 new noises in 2 days! That has to be some kind of record.

Around 3,300 until 3,800 my engine makes a strange ticking/grinding sound (no check engine light). Notice how it goes away and smooths out after 3,800 and all you hear is that wonderful induction noise.

Any ideas? Vanos?

Worn motor mounts or exhaust may have a backed out bolt or something is rubbing on the heat shield. Get it on a lift to check.

Car has new motor mounts. I'll check the exhaust tomorrow.

2018 F80 ZCP and before that 440 Gran coupe. I've had quite a few NA cars. E39 540, 350Z, fJ80 Land Cruiser, Spec Miata and prob over 30 others. Yeah...I know...I have a serious car obsession.

Didn't sound anything like it did today the last time I drove it. Not sure if this matters, but I burn almost 2-3 bottles of oil every 5k. Not a single engine leak found.

I kind of hear it. It does just sound like maybe something rattling on the outside of the engine. Maybe a heat shield or something as others have stated.

Always tricky to hear reality in videos, same thing here, can't hear anything really even when trying hard.

^ I know. I can really hear it on my iPhone 12 with the volume cranked up, but can't hear it on my wife's iPhone 8.

I'll record a 3rd gear pull where the engine noise is a lot more pronounced.

The reason I asked what car you had before was due to the S65 characteristics of noise. I came from a 335 and I thought my M3 had an exhaust leak as well as noisy valves because I was used to the much smoother N54. I was shocked how rough the S65 sounds but as I became more familiar as well as heard other M3's, I realized this motor is just a noisy fucking sewing machine but I still love it!

i replaced the crankcase non return valve on the back of driver side block and the breathers on the valve covers to intake manifold and went from 1 liter every 700 miles to 1 liter every 4k. also agree with checking the engine mounts

I had a very similar rattle after installing new cabin filters and intake filter. I would check that all those screws are fully torqued down and hopefully that helps! I know it's a simple solution but I had the exact same issue.

I'll check that too. My motor mounts were just replaced. I wonder if the mechanics messed something up as the noise started on my ride home from their shop.

My money's on a bad exhaust gasket. Seems like a fairly common failure point. I've blown through 2 already - the original driver's side and its brand new replacement only a few weeks later. Had a similar rattle/flutter sound from 2.5-5k under heavy throttle. They're cheap so I bought a couple extras from FCP Euro just in case.

I bet that's it! I can hear a tiny rattle when I put my ear down to my exhaust tips.

I hope so! Super cheap fix if so. It drove me nuts for weeks before I figured it out. Had myself convinced my engine was gonna blow up, haha.

If you can get the car up on ramps and crawl under the side just behind the front tire, the gasket is located where the cats connect to the headers. When mine went bad I could hear a ticking coming from that general area.

I've had the same sound, thought it was the baffling in the cats coming loose because it was localized in that area for me. Ended up being the gaskets.

I have the same sound on my '07 6MT. 10,000km and three track days later, still sliding around rear end with PSS on mountain runs.
