Driving Roads In The DMV

Now that the weather has cooled down a bit and I've got my car sorted for the most part, I'm thinking of planning some drives this fall.

What are some of your favorite driving roads/routes in the area?

Hey man, any of those roads going towards Purceville from downtown leesburg are great backroads, me and my motorcycle buddies ride it often. Skyline drive is nice and scenic too.

I'd love to hear anyone else's input

Skyline Drive seems to definitely be the favorite of most folks locally. I've never taken the drive down but will certainly this fall when the leaves begin to turn.

211 up and down the mountain near Shenandoah is great, as are a lot of the backroads around there. Clifton has some nice roads and is closer to DC, but the drive to/from isn't great and there can definitely be more LEO than out by Shenandoah. Lastly, to avoid the harsh VA laws, sometimes I'll take river road out towards Poolesville, MD.

Count me in for some fall drives.

If we don't want to go too far, I know some nice, twisty back roads in northern Baltimore County, above Hunt Valley.

Also, there's some nice ones around Harpers Ferry.

Of course the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains in Central VA around Skyline are always awesome, but a much longer trip.

I'm down! We should find a good day for folks and plan out a good route for a fall drive.

I'm gone until the end of the month, so if we could do it on the morning of Saturday October 30th or Sunday October 31st, that would be great.

Where do we want to do this? Which area? Frederick/Hagerstown/Harpers Ferry, or Central VA/Skyline, or Northern Baltimore County?

And I figure we start about 9am to give us time to meet up and gather.

Unless you’re going for a scenic drive/site seeing trip, Skyline drive gets crowed with tourists and cops so it’s actually quite a slow drive. I do know some very good back roads in that area and would be happy to lead a small group if people are interested. No longer have my m3, but got some fun car that I can bring if we go.

Thank you, this is great! I joined the BMW CCA earlier this year with the hop of meeting up with more BMW enthusiasts and haven't had a chance to join any events thus far.

Going to plan to RSVP and come out to the Pie Run on Sunday November 14th.

Very valuable information. Would like to avoid traffic, or worse, a pull over in the midst of a spirited drive.

Since it seems we have a good group of folks in for a meet/drive we should plan to meet somewhere local then take one of your routes for a nice spirited drive.

List of local folks who may be in for a meet/drive:

1. alamo89
2. KevinGS
3. xleemoto
4. Petlizard
5. jfo122
6. Ubersmooth
7. Idfkman
8. Patcho

How spirited are the BMW CCA driving tours / pie runs? Is it a simply sightseeing cruise, or do they push it a bit?

I'm likely interested in the Saturday November 13th Pie Run, but also interested in a drive lead by Petlizard as well. And if we do the Hunt Valley/Baltimore County, I can lead that one as I know of some good roads through there.

While it's short notice, I’m actually available this Saturday and Sunday (10/30 & 10/31) AM or next Sunday, 11/7 AM if we want to put something together.

All of our tours end up having a fast and slower group. Unless random trucks or Prius end up in front of us, no one ever complains about pace, except those who can't handle it

We'll have several stops including lunch, but you can drop whenever you want. Some people bring their dogs if they can handle being tossed around or if you slow it down
