NASA TT3 Road Atlanta
Made my 3rd trip overall to Road Atlanta this weekend to compete with NASA in TT3. My first time out there was with Chin and only got in 1 day. 2nd time was with JTI and NASA and it rained on and off through the weekend. My best time on old tires that weekend was a 1:33.1. This weekend I had sticker A7's for Sunday and was hoping for a 1:31.x.
Friday was test and tune with Just Track It. They run a good event but there are a lot of cars and it is tough to get clean laps. I only ran 2 sessions Friday due to the heat and black flagged session early on. I had some 1:34's on a set of Pirelli scrubs. Saturday was NASA. For the first session, they take your best time of the year and grid you according to that. My first time out in March, I had no official time so I was gridded last and fought through traffic for my 1:33.1. Unfortunately, they didn't see my time from March and once again gridded me dead last. The warm up session was a bust as a car went off in the first flyer and my best time was something like a 1:45 due to my position. Fortunately, the director made it up for the next timed session and I was moved to 2nd. I got a couple of real clean laps and managed a 1:34.x which put me in P1. We had a couple of hours between sessions so I ran off to get some Salata (they don't have these in Louisiana). It took a bit longer to get to an open Salata than I expected and I ended missing the next session by about 5 minutes. Ben Grambau ran a low 1:34 to knock me back to P2. I don't usually run the last session as it gets too hot but I had no choice. Fortunately, I put down a 1:33.x and regained P1 for Saturday. On Sunday, I put on the stickers with plans to get in the 1:31's. I was gridded in 3rd with 2 fast cars in front of me. One was a Ferrari challenge car running mid 1:20's and the other was a cup car running high 1:20's. Unfortunately, I managed to catch the cup car at top of esses on first flyer. Second lap was clean but I could only get a 1:32.8. Looking at my data, I was 0.5 seconds faster through 3, but lost it all back between 5 and 6. I also lost some time on the back straight but was better from 10a to Finish line. There was easily a second if I could at least match my best times from 5 through 10. In Session 2, I was gridded 3rd, but the cup car didn't show up so it was just me and the Ferrari and no way I would catch him. I managed back to back 1:32.8's. I had a moment in 3 on the first hot lap but second lap was clean but not any faster. Looking at data, I am still struggling in 5. I know what to do but just couldn't make my feet and hands do it. I still managed to finish P1 both days to win 4 tires and a giant mug. Not sure when I will track again. It's too hot in the south in July and August. I do want to stay sharp so we'll see. Here's video of session 2 on Sunday. I can see so many mistakes that I need to correct next time. |

Awesome work! Do you ever run in NASA TX's TT? You'd be my competition. :-)

You should! It's a fun track, lots of elevation change and plenty of great spots for overtaking.

Thanks for the write up!
Congrats on the win! What were the air temps? The warm up from the Ferrari was pretty crazy. That was some pretty hard weaving, and he was crawling. Luckily you had A7's, so you didn't need much warm up. My Pirellis would never have warmed up on that lap.......
