Best Street Tire (for a car that rarely sees anything over 85)
I know, SEARCH!!! But here's the thing, everyone seems to love the Michelin PS 4Ss and I'm okay paying the price for them if they really are the best tire for my intended use. But I live in Southern Oregon where the speed limit is 65mph so I rarely have the opportunity to do anything over that unless I'm passing someone, and even then it's just a quick short burst up to maybe 85. The other issue is that there's a lot of wildlife here so spirited driving is fairly limited as well (not to mention the ridiculous amount of gravel on the road in the corners). I put the PS 4Ss on my Z4 and feel as though it was a waste of money since I never got close to their capabilities. So, is there an alternative option that might save me some cash AND give me peace of mind knowing that if something happens to them (like a bad puncture) I didn't just flush money down the drain? I would love to track the M but I said the same thing about the Z and due to distance I never made it to a track in the 5 years I had the car. Also, the M is strictly a weekend/summer vehicle so wet performance isn't much of a concern for me. The only rain it will see is if it happens to rain during a weekend road trip or something.
Here's some background too, had Bridgestone Potenzas (not sure which version) on my Z4 and hated them. Switched to the Michelin PS 4S and liked them but didn't feel as though my use justified the price Have Firestone Firehawks on my X3 and love them. I realize the X3 isn't an M but when I travel for work it's usually in the X3 and these tires are smooth, quiet and have held up great... and have seen speeds over 100 for extended periods of time with zero issue. Ran Kumho Ecstas and various Toyos on other BMWs in the past, both were great for daily drivers initially but wore out quickly. |

I just recently put on some Michelin PS4S myself. Was either between these or the PSS for daily street use and went with PS4S since they were nearly the same price.

I tried already but it's taking them too long to respond. Their AOL dial up is slower than my driving.

For your area of the country, PS4S are great tires for the rain as well (much better than PSS). Keep in mind that you can get tires that last longer but the compound will be harder and will not ride as good. Another item to keep in mind, when I look to buy a used car I will ALWAYS look at the tires on it. If they are cheap tires, it's a good indicator the owner is cutting corners elsewhere as well. If you want to save a few dollars, there will be some black Friday sales coming up from Discount Tire and maybe Tire Rack.

I’m also a fan of PS4S - I know it’s a complete different animal but I run them on my GTR in 285/35/20 & 345/30/20 and even at those sizes and on that pig very impressed with the ride quality (performance as well).
But I think you might already have your answer. Since you know you really like the firehawks on your X3 maybe give them a shot on your M3? |

This is in no means meant to be condescending but out of curiosity, why have such a high performance car you can't enjoy? Not that I'm condoning recklessness or racing on the street but if I couldn't enjoy the M as it was intended I'd probably just get a different car. Again, question is purely curiosity not being a smart ass
I have PSS on mine and are happy. But don't shy away from the Firestone firehawks. My buddy put them on his boxster S as he was in a pinch and he loves them. Reviews have all been great as well.

Kumho PS91 or 92 or whatever is the most recent summer from them
The continental ExtremContact Sport is a better rain tire than even the PS4S, but wears a bit faster. Comfy and quiet though, and about $30 cheaper in the same size depending ont he size The X3 has a lot more cushion between you and the tire and a lot taller sidewall. I have heard sdome complaints about road noise on the Firehawks in low profiile sizes on performance cars and if that's ac oncern I'd look elsewhere

I don't see what driving 85mph on the highway has to do with cornering hard (evasive maneuvers) or braking hard to avoid an animal
This sounds like the people who tell me they don't need winter tires in the Northeast because they'll "stay home" when it snows or other who don't replace their tires when they reach the wear bars because they 'drive slowly'. I strongly believe people should have good tires on their cars. We do not get to choose when we need to take an evasive maneuver. It doesn't have to be a PS4s but it has to be a good tire |

I also understand the argument of just getting the best possible tires since they'll help in just about all driving conditions. However, there are trade offs involved with all tires. It could be how quickly they wear, wet handling versus dry, cold versus hot weather, noise, etc etc. I'm also the type that would rather get dedicated wheels and tires for when I do track the car than, along with swapping out pads, etc. So money isn't the issue, for me it's about useage.

Many many argued the point of even having a high performance car, I will leave that part alone.
But yes if you feel you don't need all the grip you can get, then I don't see a problem moving to a more cost effective tire for your use. (Hankook V12s, Conti DW, Firehawks, etc). My street setup are V12 evos currently because the wheels I bought came with an almost new set of tires, and they aren't as bad as I thought they would be, still very capable and I rarely find the need for more grip. |

Conti Extremecontact...best bang for the buck. I would get them over the PS4s if they had them in a 275/30/19 front and 295/30/19 rear. They have OEM sizes and you save about $75 per tire.

I'd be looking at Conti DWS since you're worried about colder temps. Any quality all season really. Conti DWS were about to get installed on my E46 I had when I was in Charlotte due to the colder weather. And they're really affordable

I think the Conti Extreme Contact Sport is the best mix of comfort, cost, and wet traction. If you add dry traction as a priority then the PS4S wins, but In my experience (and I've heard it from others) the Conti is less edgy at the limit which is another streeet tire plus IMO
I hate the DWS and the DWS06. I hated the DW. But this particular Conti is Good Stuff Colder temps don't make the *good* newer summer tires, the ones that now don't warn you to stay off them until 20 degrees, worse than all-seasons in cool weather, it's not like 15 years ago when summer tires turned into undrivable rocks below 40 degrees. The PS4S and Conti are both friendly sub-40 in the damp. You won't find anybody winning index at an autocross on all-seasons unless it's snowing, and that person will lose to the guy who brought snow tires anyway, because all-seasons are actually no-seasons and suck equally in all conditions making life a boring gray blah experience that you're better off just not living at all /all-season soapbox
