Mr12Volt Appreciation

Just installed Mr12Volt, couldn’t be happier with the results. I upgraded to CIC(I have an 08) last year and was blown away by how much it made my car feel updated. Now with CarPlay I’m in heaven. Integration with MOST bus so no audio degradation, easy install, everyone that spends time in their M should have this. Money well spent! Thank you Gordon!

yeah, i've installed 3 of them in recent years, including one on a CCC E60 M5. didn't even bother with the CIC conversion there (they only made CIC available in 2010, so the vast majority of cars don't have it) because it still had a MOST connector. sofa king awesome.

Very interested in getting one for my M3 but I heard some would need coding for it to work. Did you have to do any additional coding to get it to function correctly?

For CIC e9x m3 cars, you may need to code CDMM_CHANGER_3 to mp3_cdc in the CIC module.

In my car, I did not need to do any coding whatsoever. It just worked automatically. When I checked what my car was coded to after the fact, CDMM_CHANGER_3 was already set to mp3_cdc.

Coding all depends on the way your car was equipped and build date.
Sometimes some cars need it some don't. The coding is simple and can be done through bimmercode/protools or any of the coding tools available on the market for this platform.

Discount? Tell me more...

Really want to do this. Saw a thread today where someone said the NBT Evo Retrofit is the way to go, but can't justify that price difference. Plus Mr12Volt seems easy to install which is a huge plus given it's winter and I don't have a garage.

Thanks OP for the vote of confidence!

nbt evo is the way to go, considering the head units have become cheaper and I am still using a factory eps amp. either way to each their own, if you dont want to spend the money just go with mr12volt

Can you give a ballpark of what the NBT route costs nowadays? Maybe my quick search showing minimum $2k was inaccurate.

depends on how savvy you are, I picked up a nbt headunit and controller from a guy parting out an f32 on market place for $350 and a cid off ebay for a nbt non evo so you can separate the screen for $170 and a power cable from ebay uk for $25. BR enbt emulator harness is $550. coding is free, f32 nbt non evo display goes into the cic housing. some work to the center console cover and its ready to go.

agreed, really updates the car and brings it uptodate with new car tech.

once you have carplay/androidauto, it's really all you need.

Interesting. Don't think I'm that savvy. Or I'm just lazy lol. Seems like a lot of work. Mr12Volt seems more 'plug n play'.

You mean the NBT retrofit or Mr12Volt?

realistically, m12v is superior in terms of benefit for money spent. Plus nbt evo has alot of unused features, videos from usb, power display, wireless gopro display, m track mode, etc. I dont use most of it, I just utilize the wireless carplay most of the time and the siri through the voice button.

There are a few benefits to going the NBT EVO route.

Higher resolution screen, touch screen. Better integration of calls within carplay. Better call quality. Ability to use the radio while in carplay. Plus all the additional features of NBT EVO vs CIC when not using carplay.

Is it worth the extra time and expense of doing the retrofit? That's up to you.

I've been considering it, but I still have some outstanding questions related how you do coding of NBT EVO after the retrofit, and what the thing end to end looks like in ISTA once its done.

Touch screen would be more useful if it’s closer in the e9x platform. I don’t think I’d use it much in my e9x though.

If done right, NBT EVO can get you CP/AA with more work. I was after high quality wireless CarPlay and Mr12Volt covers that. In the end I don’t think NBT EVO is worth it to me but I can’t hate on that option.

Completely agree about the touch part. The screen on the e9x isn't in a position where its comfortable to touch, because it was never meant to be touched. They placed it where it is for visibility.

Interested. I still have CCC in my 08 M3. Can I still get Mr12Volt with CCC? What benefits would I get? What is the discount everyone is talking about here?

i ran it on my CCC M5. worked great. you still get wireless carplay, camera support etc, just a lower res screen. given that you're not watching movies on it, it doesn't really matter. or at least didn't for me.
