Rod Bearings Vancouver
Thanks to everyone for the useful information regarding RG and kits from Turner. I've been sending out oil samples to Blackstone and have consistent 3 ppm lead and 2 ppm copper (08 E90 M3, 77 k KM). Does anyone who replaced rod bearings have data from Blackstone or another lab? I know that for the later M3s the bearing material changed, and you won't see any lead readings.
I have followed most of the threads on E9x M3 rod bearing problems, and as soon as a I see any noticeable increase in lead and copper I will change bearings, probably to BE. I will probably do the work myself, however I'm not sure it is feasible to do the job without a hoist. Some people on the forums said they could do the job just with jack stands, but I have jacked the car up and I'm not sure that I can get the car high enough to lower the suspension components. Has anyone done this job without a hoist? |

Depending on your mileage you might want to consider changing the motor mounts too. The oem mounts will start break down around 80,000 - 90,000km. Changing the mounts out while doing the RB adds maybe 15 minutes of work.

Wait I am confused... so you’re getting new mounts with the kit you got, but in a few months you’re going to spend another $1000+ on labour to change to a different mount?

LOL, what's the rush? I have a warranty until August 2019. Next time at VCM here in Victoria I will ask him how many E92 M3 bearing replacements he has done. When I do decide to get them replaced I want someone experienced.
ItsGary, your bearings look like they were ready for replacement. Good timing! |

Many performance shops won't do the RB job here locally in Vancouver, because of the risk if something goes wrong and they are to be blamed. If you have access to a hoist and a knowledgeable person with experience, it's a pretty straight forward DIY job.

Mine is a 2012 with 56,000kms and over 20 track days. My extended warranty runs out this August so might just do it this summer. Mark has done a half dozen bearing jobs now so it's good he has that experience for our cars.
