Took delivery of 1M last night...impressions from an M3 owner.
So I couldn´t resist the limited-edition lure of the 1M and the excellent reviews calling it one of the best M´s in years and took delivery of mine last night.
I also own an E90 M3 and an E46 M3. All cars are manuals (save the manuals!). I will be keeping all three for at least a month, then we´ll see. I put about 100 miles on the car last night, mostly highway. I am sticking to the break-in procedure - no speeds above 170kph, no revs above 5,500 RPM. No full throttle.....maybe not that religiously. Initial impressions on the car: - It feels "sportier" than the E90. Many things contribute to this, but mostly it is because it is smaller, lighter, simpler, and with a nice exhaust rumble low in the rev range. - It feels more agile than the E90 at lower speeds, but also less stable at higher speeds, for example, during a 100 mph sweeping turn. - The E90 of course feels like a more sophisticated and mature car. - The engine definitely blows the E90 away in the lower rev ranges, but I subjectively feel the E90 is faster when it is high in the rev range (even at Mexico City´s altitude - which is almost 7,000 feet above sea level). I picked up the E90 immediately after driving the 1M yesterday. . Throttle response is better than I expected. Of course it is no match to either of the N/A engines in the M3s in this regard but lag truly is minimal. I have driven many other recent BMW turbos and frankly the 1M has exceeded my expectations by a lot. It is pretty responsive, especially in M mode (which by the way it is a glorified sport button from the E46 days, nothing like the twin personality function in the M3). - Brakes, gearbox, steering are superb, I think all 3 are better then the E90. - The ride is surprisingly compliant, similar to the E90 in "normal" and much better than the E46. - The sound is great because it sound nice down low in revs. The M3s sound racier but you have to rev them high (especially the E90) so the 1M makes you feel more "sporty" in regular driving. - Interior is of course inferior (luxury-wise) than the M3 but I think it also "feels" sportier and there is some appeal to the simplicity of it. The M logo on the tach does light up (like it did on the E46 but not on the E90). But the shift knob doesn´t light up and there is no variable yellow warning zone on the tach. I track all my cars so this thing is headed to the track soon. Will update as I get to drive it more. A few pics of delivery: [IMG] [/IMG]

You do realize that the brakes and suspension are right off the the M3 right?

The suspension tuning however did surprise me. I think they got the non-adjustable calibration of spring/damper rates for the 1M just right.

I'm sure 1M is a great car, it just gets a little iffy when people start comparing it to M3. I have never seen threads comparing M3 to M5 or M6 or if there is any, it must be just a handful of them but personally I have not seen any. More 135, 335, 335is and now 1M drivers are more obsessed with M3 than M3 drivers being obsessed with ANY other car (may be GT3). If that says anything it says M3 drivers are faaar more satisfied with their car than most other groups. Satisfied with their pros AND cons. We admit our M3 short comings and we have no problems accepting them. And that doesn't come from being delusional, it comes from being confident. Congrats and thanks for the honest review.

Congrats - I love that little car!
I'll be keeping an eye on the next-gen F2x M2 or whatever they call it. If I buy another BMW, it will be that one.

thanks for the review.
it's good to compare the m3 and 1m because the m3 used to be the the only real option for a sports car that they made. now the 1m is also an excellent option, probably better and more fun for the track. the 1m is pretty much pure performance and the m3 is performance with some practicality added in for daily life. great choice on the 1m, it will be fun times on the track for you. |

Yes. I go to the track about once a month. The 1M will go stock the first time. Let´s see how it holds up. I will post impressions after that.

Small update: I took the 1M last night on a tight mountain road that I drive every day on my way home. I think on that kind of road it might be a bit more "fun" than the M3. You can definitely feel the weight difference on quick side to side transitions. Plus the gobs of low-down torque mean you have more flexibility in your choice of gearing.
As the speeds get higher (autobahn-like) then the M3 feels better. I think the 1M will be a hoot at the track.

The 1M however is very good job by M, even with the turbo engine. Especially at the price point we got it in Mexico it can´t be beat. Here it´s about 12K higher than a 135i but a whopping 25K less than an M3. So it´s fantastic value.

Fortunately the dealer was true to its word and waited for my credit to get through. Getting a BMW here and importing it to the U.S. wouldn´t work IMHO. First, BMWs here are somewhere around 20% more expensive than in the U.S. when comparably equipped. Secondly, we get euro-spec cars which I think you couldn´t certify for the U.S. without major hassle and expense. It might be worth it for a total BMW nut if you were getting a car that isn´t available there, like a 130i hatch (BTW there is a beautiful M-Sport 130i hatch at a dealer here that they just can´t sell) or an X1. Huge expense and financially idiotic but at least a car like that would be truly rare in the U.S.
