Yeah, that is why I said the color temp AND how bright I want it. My friend has 6k rings that are as bright as the headlights. It looks like a mess when at night. I would want 4,300 or lower just to keep in line with stockish look AND have it bright enough to keep its shape sharp. Overly bright rings look like blurry O's imo

I can see how LEDs make the car look more modern to people who don't know cars very well, but I can't help but look at these and think, while some are okay, they all look so obviously aftermarket. Which can be good or bad depending on the rest of your car and what you're going for. Not for me.
My car came with some LEDs (not sure which kind) and I have some Osram H8s (and D1S CBIs) awaiting installation. |

My car had the H8 Lux white LEDs when I bought it, but one was burnt out. It didn't look quite right on Melbourne Red.
I also wasn't sold on how the stock halogen bulbs look "kind of but not really yellow" so I got yellow halogen bulbs instead of replacing the LEDs. Having a red car on bronze rims I am fully admitting to having an unconventional color scheme!! |

Just put the H8 180 Lux in my pre-LCI. Took about 5 minutes. (Note: I have lanky hands so was able to get it done real easy.)
For some reason the iPhone camera makes them look yellow. When you look at them in person they look white. (And yes, it needs a wash - stupid never ending East Coast rain. And I am still missing the front roundel - fell off in 115 F heat wave.)

I go back and forth, but to me, the original OEM bulbs maintain the classic nature of the car. I also HATED the E92 3 Seties LCI update, the original headlights are a much better shape.

I can appreciate the arguments here.
But it is kind of silly to say what's "period correct" or "OEM correct." How many people change the kidney and fender grills to black to match the shadow line trim? That's not period correct. Hell its not even BMW correct. But it just looks better and everyone knows it. That's what BMW should have done from the start. |

Additionally, they were factory equipment on some editions, including but not limited to the GTS and Lime Rock Park. So your statement about black grilles not being "period correct" is incorrect. Putting black grilles on an E30 wouldn't be "period correct", but on an E9x M3 or F8x, they are absolutely "period correct" and "OEM correct."

See below for a screencap of the catalogue. Everything from the black grilles to alcatara steering wheel to MPE and even 359M "M Performance light alloy" wheels (both silver & black) were offered in the parts offering from BMW. Even outside of special editions, I have seen many E9x and F8x window stickers that have the BMW Performance/M Performance parts listed & included in the MSRP. A bit of useful trivia, if God forbid you're ever involved in a fender bender where your OEM BMW Performance/M Performance part needs replacement, just give your body shop & insurance the BMW Part No. for the part and they'll replace it with the same OEM Performance piece (provided you have full OEM coverage). That's how legit/factory BMW Performance/M Performance parts are

Didn't know alcantra steering wheels were a BMW option. So few opted for that, because seeing that in an E9X is rare indeed....let alone someone getting a factory-installed one. Thanks for sharing. |

All of the M Performance Accessories were not available from the FACTORY, but were PORT installed before the dealer delivery! The Lime Rock Park editions all left the factory with CHROME grill surrounds.

My point is that they are factory/OEM parts (though not options) that could be ordered with the car before production or delivery. Many E9x's were spec'd this way. Port install or not, the parts themselves are Genuine BMW and designed specifically for the car. Regarding the LRP, most I've seen left the factory with chrome grille surrounds & I've yet to confirm whether any left the factory with black ones, so you might be onto something here. I must've been thinking a bit too fast when I was typing there, but my point stands. OEM black grilles are 100% appropriate/correct on the car. To use BMW's own terminology, they are 100% ORIGINAL BMW TEILE. Even taking away the LRP, there are still E9x M3s - M3 Edition, GTS, CRT, Competition Edition, Frozen ___ Editions, and BMW Individual builds - that left the factory with an array of parts from the aforementioned catalogue, including black grilles.

I believe it is due to the design of the lens, whereas the OEM bulb had a balance lighting that gave out an even distribution of yellow ray of light when on. But I do agree with your observation...however, they still look nice for an alternative from altering the entire headlight unit.
