UOAs are not even close to being 100% accurate on a motor's health. They are better used for understanding how a particular oil and change interval works for the owner's driving style and exact motor.

We need a poll initiated on this thread about the # of people who use 0W-40 vs 10W-60.
Considering winter is around the corner, I'm strongly considering switching to 0W-40. Again, only if I'm fully convinced its the right move to make. |

My latest report on my 08 with higher than average milage.
Good to see I ran the oil longer and lead went down, copper still pretty low.

Yes, but still pay for TBN and TAN on the next analysis to make sure you haven't depleted the reserve alkalinity.

My first BlackStone Report.
Bought car back in Feb. Car had about 10k miles on this report. Car was a Northern car....very cold when I picked it up. It's my only concern, because of warmup. Had Mike/BPM perform a forensic check on car before I bought it. 17 Redlines first 2 years of life 8,3XX max. RPM...was a concern because it's a 6 speed(NO MONEY shifts) Max. Speed.....105 Owned by a POSER One question....SA at stealer recommended BG oil treatment. What do y'all think? Planning 5-6k mile oil changes.

I'm not interested in running longer intervals, so it wasn't a concern for me. Also note my figures on in KMs, 11k KMs is only 6.8k Miles and based on other TWS samples, oil/additives is not a concern, the oil can last much longer if someone choose to do so.

It's not a matter of running longer intervals, it's understanding if your current interval is appropriate. If you've depleted the TBN, or the TAN has spiked, it should be changed. Particulate counts are just a small part of the overall picture.

I haven't seen anyone running TWS show TBN or TAN outside of acceptable limits no matter what interval, have you?

What's the point of doing oil analysis if the newer bearing 09'+ don't have lead in them?

The bearings still contain copper. If an owner has been doing periodic oil analysis, theoretically they would see a rise in copper as the initial layer of the bearing is worn through.

Just got my first 0w40 M1 sample back. As others have seen, I saw a slight increase in iron and aluminum, and actually a slight increase in lead as well, but the lead is still lower than three out of 4 samples on 10w60, and copper didn't budge. Additives held up a little better because I burned more this time around than on 10w60, but not at an alarming rate by any means especially considering the high-rpm use it gets. I'm going to run one more change interval on the 0w40 and see what it looks like, if there's no trend up on wear metals I'll stick with it and go back to every other change.
My miles are primarily highway 3000rpm+ top gear running, suburban "city" miles, with as much hoonage as safely and legally achievable. I decided to run this oil during the summer to get worst-case scenario including all the stupid driving, autocrossing, etc. I do and see what it did. Doesn't look too bad. If it's doing what we think it should be doing, the sample I take next spring/early summer, with all the cold-weather driving, will probably compare pretty favorably to the April sample I took earlier this year after driving the car in the cold months on 10w60, but we'll see. Next time I'm going to send in some virgin M1 0w40, unless somebody else has an analysis they can post, to see what's in it.

Hmmmm
Just got my latest report back, and it's not great news
Despite zero track time and mostly higway/backroad cruising, my lead is up to 20 and iron up to 17. However, the copper remains low at 2. I did run this interval significantly longer than last time (12.8k km vs 9k) and it was summertime so there was definitely more spirited driving, but never any launches, drag racing or other silliness. Could this be a particle streak? Is it time to start shopping for bearings? My plan (as of the moment) is to wait for another report after about 7-9k km and see if the trend continues. Note -- My numbers are in km, not miles. Most recent interval was approx 8k miles. Previous was 5.6k miles. Total miles on car approx 64K.

2010 M3 - 30k oil analysis
I had this one done in March when the car came out from winter storage. Very few miles on the oil, as the oil was changed in June and with travel I hadn't been driving it much that year.
The oil has 4000 miles on that changed oil now, so I'll be able to get it to 5-7.5k miles before I change it. That'll be a more interesting analysis. 0 lead at all, for what its worth. Last edited by chadwick; 11-26-2014 at 01:34 PM.. |

Just got my report back from my first oil change since switching to Mobil1 0W40. This was a 5k mile oil change with all street driving. Only times I get to redline the motor is on on-ramps. My lead readings have definitely went down!

Seems Blackstone still looking for lead as a sign ofbearing wear. Or do the succession of zero lead on those 2011 cars really indicate no wear? but aren't the newer bearings lead free and, which other metals would help you know on the newer shells?

Need some insight
Not sure how to read the Lead Here as my car is a 2011. the car gets fueled up at the track with Sonoco 93....Dont know if they maybe put the 93 in the old 110 leaded tank or something. Any insight would be helpful.
