Hankook Rs3 vs Yokohama AD08R vs BF Goodrich Rival vs Direzza Star Spec 2

Trying to gather any info. These are the second version of each.

Seems from a friend that the ad08R lasts much longer than the Rs3 and maybe be a bit quicker on the track. .2-.4 seconds faster on a 1:30-2min road course. The ad08R is more expensive but lasts much longer. From my experience the rs3 is best it's first day. Close the second day and 3rd day really falls off by 1-2 seconds maybe. Although they are useable still. He says the ad08r falls off a bit after the first day but holds steady and lasts 6-8 days. Which actually makes it a cheaper buy in the long run. Have no idea about the other tires really. Just ordered a set of ad08R so can share my own experience. Curious about the others.

Note: this is strictly about lap times and tire life. I don't give a shit about noise or daily drivability.

^that if you had another choice into it. That said, I only have experience with the RS3, great two days, but fell off considerably after. I've heard great things from personal friends about the AD08, imagine the new ones are even better.

If strictly street tire, I loved my RE11s when I had them as we'll.

I tried the RS-3 and they were not for me. They'd get greasy half way through a 20 minute session. They seemed to wear well but very noisy on the street. I also tried the BFG Rivals and loved them. Very consistent lap after lap and seemed to wear well. The others I have not tried.

Might want to try the Track section on Bimmerforums.
LOTS of hard core track guys there.

I have the Star Spec 2 but have only had them at one track day and it was on a track I'd never been on. I had RS3's before that and them seem pretty close

I've been on AD08's for the last 3 years and switched at the end of the season last year to the AD08R's and love them! Been rocking the normal AD's and had to get a new set of all 4 before my trip up to Watkins this year and saw the R's on the tirerack website and figured these should be better. Made the switch and the 10 hour trip began and will have to say they are way more comfortable than the regular AD's, (not that you care about that sort of thing

). That being said, couldn't really tell the performance benefit as it was my first time at watkins, no metric to gauge against, and it rained most of the time. The real barometer was my trip about a month later to Road America where I've been to a few times. Haven't been to RA in the complete dry in about 2 years, but have had some pretty dry laps and never managed a sub 2:40 and this time around (of course day 1 was a downpour) but day 2 was perfect and not only broke 2:40 but managed into the 2:37's, barely but I'll take it. that was the last day of the year last year. Day after,I wake up and the drivers side front is flat and had a huge chunk of metal, picked up on track,in the passenger rear that audibly let out air when I pulled it out. So, that's my story...Two weekends on fast fun tracks, about 2500 miles of road miles, two flat tires and a new personal best. I can't wait to get a new set and see what these bad boys can really do after a season. Loved em...

That's exactly opposite to what I had in mind. My Rivals overheated and fell off after say 5 laps of each session. Forgiving at the limit but their walls are soft, so they lacked precision compared to Z1s. I also overcooked the Z1s halfway into each session as well.

Haven't tried the RS3s but I heard they don't fall off... I was gonna try them next, but maybe I gotta do more homework.

I've never had RS3s get greasy on me after 5 sets. I don't think RS3s do very well with heavy cars. Instead of getting greasy and falling off they just wear out super fast on an E9X M3. They'll last a long time on an E36 or E46. I got 6 weekends out of RS3s on my E46.

The Z2s seems like a slightly better Z1.

I've haven't seen a good review other than magazine reviews which don't really run the tire for more than 2-3 laps. Most people seem to complain about greasiness after 15 minutes. Magazines raved about the SS Z1s but never mentioned how they get greasy after 15 minutes.

I'd rather look at the Maxxic RC-1s before the Ventus TDs. I still run NT01s...a great budget tire that grips almost like an R-Comp but acts like a street tire.

I currently run the NT01 and love them but you expressed that you need more life out of a tire...i ran the RS3 on my e46 m3 last year and loved them!!!!! i felt as they actually got better as they wore...never had them get greasy except when the day temp was over 100deg but im pretty sure any tire will grease up when it gets that hot...they are rough on the street and slippery until they warm up though!!!!! my close friend runs the RIVALS and loves them but they do not have the grip the RS3 has but the trade off is the tread ware is much higher....if i had to take one step down from the NTO1 i would hands down run the RS3!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year I wanted to try the ZII or the Rival and the Rivals were delayed so I ended up with ZIIs. I ran them for half a year, like someone else said it's a slightly better version of the original StarSpec.

Overall good/consistent performance with no noticeable decrease in grip as tread was reduced, although I didn't run them to the cords. The ZII still gets greasy towards the end of the session but not as much as the Z1. Very good in the wet too.

Going back to NT01s this year as the slicing issue seems to have subsided. After running rcomps for years it's difficult to go back to a street tire, even for a few events.

I think its both although most rules will classify it as an R-Comp. Its the worst R-Comp you can get or the best street tire available. Which is why it is a grear HPDE tire and probably an awful competitive driving tire.

I do love the coo'ing sound it makes when they're brand new. That's enough reason for me to buy them...

I use NT01 245/40 on the front and RA1s 335/30 on the rear for the RS. The car seems to love the tire combo.

245/40/18s NT01s front and 335/30/18s RA1s rear. A handful of the Rennlist guys run the 335 RA1 with the NT01 instead of the 315/30/18 due to a higher sidewall and the fact the nannies don't go nuts with a much shorter diameter tire height like the 315/30/18 (stock rear tire is 325/30/19). Yes, I still have the nannies on at all times.
