Just purchased a 2009 E92 M3 with Nav CIC that has 6FL option (pre combox, Bluetooth calling only)

Bought an OEM BMW Y cable (30 pin connector) from ECS just to plug in an iPod with like 15k songs to control with idrive and call it a day rather than spending a bunch on combox retrofit etc.

The car just says not supported for every single iPod/old iPhone I plug in. I've tried iPod classic, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPod touch, iPod shuffle. Every single one shows the docked message on screen and charging but just shows not supported on nav screen. Am I missing something? Is their different versions of the cable? Anyone have similar issues? Please help before I smash the nav screen into oblivion!!

This is the cable I bought for reference
