You don't have to change them if you choose not to. A few forum members are running springs with no bumpstop change and they're happy with it. Anyway it's a factory bumpstop that I have ordered from my dealer and it gives more travel which is always a good thing.

Eventually when i get the car, I wanted to go with Eibachs since its a conservative drop, i don't want something too aggressive.
So from reading around, the best way to go along with doing springs is to swap to e36 bump stops and shave the mounts? What are you guys usually paying for install of this set-up? Would a local shop know what to do or they won't know about shaving the mounts? Im not to good when it comes to suspension so im not sure about these things.

If you are going to go the direction of the shave mounts and E36 bump stops and eibach springs, seems smarter to just go for the DINAN kit, as it would be about the same price. new top mounts are expensive.

I'd say the jury is still out on this one. There hasn't been one definitive answer weather changing the bump stops is necessary or has any effect at all.

Do you really need a machine shop to shave down the guide supports? Seems like a job that can be performed at home with the correct tools.

My Eibach springs are installed on the car along with the E36 bumptops and my front guide supports are shaved appropriately. I also have fresh Bridgestone Potenza Re-11's on the car now and a fresh factory alignment from BMW. I need to drive the car more before I can give a detailed review. So far, the car rides basically like stock. The car definitely feels like it's a little firmed up, but by no means are my teeth rattling or the ride jolting. Slight improvement over stock handling, but this is exactly what I expected knowing the Eibach spring rates are very similar to OEM and the drop height with the springs are close to OEM. It's exactly what I want. Very happy so far, will report back.

I understand the theory behind that, but has there been any evidence to prove this is true? It adds a great deal of expense/effort to a very cheap spring upgrade. Although still relatively inexpensive compared to other mods for this car.

The Dinan kit is $1,100...so the shaved top mounts cost $800 extra?!?

Total $550 not including labor to machine the guides. Purchasing new guides is not required. You can get way with $350 for the full solution if you use the existing guides.

I have a shop by me that does alot of work (basically they tow for the town and do body work etc) They also have a custom muffler shop in there and they do some performance work. Do you think they could just shave the existing guides i have now? Basically just go there with the springs and bumpstops, would they know who much to shave off?

Would this shop be doing the fitting and aligning the car? The main problem is time off the road when the guides are removed and sent to a machine shop. If they can do them in house that's great. Don't forget that if you buy a new set of guides and bumps you can sell them on when you put the car back to standard at sale time. Last edited by alpina527; 02-24-2011 at 05:15 PM.. |

It also should be noted that I bought my Eibachs for $232 shipped from Amazon.
That will bring my final cost to $232 + 30 + Guide Milling = approx. $300 total. Much cheaper than the same Dinan solution.
