Bumping this thread. Just went out to my car at work to get some lunch and as it was warming up the idle got choppy and dropped. The check engine light came on and "engine malfunction, reduce power". I did notice the car diling pretty choppy this morning as well but didnt think much of it. Just bought this car less than A WEEK AGO. Thought that I would be problem free for a while lol, I just sold my e46 M3.

Going to take her in to the stealership and have them look at the Service Bulletin you guys have posted. Ill report back!

I had the same issue and it turned out to be a bad fuel pressure sensor. I thought it was the idle actuator at first too.

I just got this tonight as well. 2011 with 42k miles. Weird thing is when it goes into limp mode, my car sounds like a subaru boxer engine with an aftermarket exhaust. The car was shaking pretty badly too. Turn off the engine, start her back up and everything is back to normal. Very strange. Happened twice tonight.

Hi. This is an old thread but it has happened to me in the last 3 days. I want to have more information, if my car is out of warranty because its a 09 and there is a SIB can bmw fix it for free? If not, anyone has an idea of much would it cost to fix this issue assuming its the idle valve actuator.

Thanks

It may be this idle actuator problem but there are fuel pump and sensor issues that have similar symptoms. Non of them are cheap fixes from the stealerships. I never had the idle acuator fix done (yet) but a fuel pump, fuel rail sensor and fuel pump control unit cost around $2k under an extended warranty plan.

I'm having the exact symptoms as OP described.

1) Engine goes into limp mode on start up with all the error messages, DSC, DBC, Emission etc. RPM limited to below 5k with no power to accelerate

2) After restarting a few more times, it went away but now shows the Increased emission error but drives like normal

3) After a few more restarts the Increased emission error would go away too and everything seems fine

4) Step 1-3 would repeat itself in a cycle upon every few restarts

In addition, the motor experiences slow cranks and sometimes does not start on the first try, but always starts on the second try if it occurs.

Which parts need to be replaced and for how much?

Same thing is happening to me as well.

3rd time I'm about a month or two. Happens out of no where. Upon shutting down and restarting it goes away and car drives normally again.
