Might be relocating to NJ

I am totally new to NY/NJ area and I might be relocating to start a new job (if I accept the offer). My work will be mainly in Warren, NJ.

Where is the best place to live in that is close to Warren, NJ? I am looking specifically for a place with best schools and great area overall.

Any suggestion or feedback is appreciated.

I live in Bridgewater NJ not to far from Warren. Roughly 20 minutes. Bridgewater is really nice been living here almost my whole life. School system is very good as well. Bedminster is also a great town. Far hills or Basking Ridge all really good in the area. Hope this helps. PM me if you have additional questions

The Millburn/Short Hills school system is one of the best school systems in the state (Usually top 5). This appears to be about 20 minutes from Warren.

The Princeton school system is also one of the best. That's about 50 minutes from Warren.

Both of these areas are great areas to live. Pricey though.

there are a few towns to consider - expensive to slightly cheaper.

summit
new providence
Berkley Heights
Gillette
Stirling
Millington

all of these towns are off of highway 78 and on a train line.

Millington is the closest to Warren.

Are you guys familiar with that area at all? Warren is a great town, it's surrounded by other great towns and a very good school system which is shared with watchung. Taxes aren't insane, you're right next to Rt. 78 (close proximity to nyc) shopping, restaurants., etc. OP if you can find a reasonably priced house, stay in Warren.

I am talking about Hunterdon county. About an hour from NYC and a little over an hour to Philly. About 1.5 hrs to Sea Side if you like the boardwalk. I just feel the folks around here are more friendly, social, and more country if you like outdoor activities. The more east you go, the more densely populated it gets. Its really about what you prefer.. i have to drive 8 minutes from my house in the woods to get milk but, its quiet at night and the sky is dark (no light pollution). I've moved around NJ (all within 40 min from where I am now) and this is where I came back to.

If i had to pick a second place to live, it would be in Hillsborough (Somerset county). It was rated one of the best places to live in the US for all around reasons. I lived there for 5 years.

Brings me to the question; are you looking to buy a house or rent apt/condo/town house?

Some things to consider in NJ:
Much higher property taxes, higher auto insurance, no more pumping your own gas and its cheap!, cost of living may be slightly higher, you wont find a decent place to rent for under $1200 and thats without a garage, and traffic.

You'll learn this building

Good chance of hitting one these fellows

I would take everyones advice and make a list. Drive around and see for yourself what you prefer.

Thanks for the advice. I am looking to rent for first year and then buy once I find the place I want to live in. I didn't imagine NJ to be higher in living cost. I am coming from Northern Virginia and which is already one of the highest in nation wide. I did hear about the high property taxes which is insane but house values are still affordable in NJ. Here in Nova, you cannot find a townhouse below 500k in areas with good schools. I ran some search on Zillow and I was able to find alot of houses (not townhouses) for the same price a townhouse goes for here in Northern VA.

Warren is a great area. As another post suggested, take a look around the rote 78 corridor from summit, basking ridge, bernardsville, all the way to Clinton.

You get more for your $ the further you get away from NYC.

Avoid Newark, Irvington, and Hillside. Essex county can have some of the best towns- Millburn, a Short Hill, North Caldwell, and some of the worst.

The nicer towns mentioned will have houses easily in the 800k+ range, if not a lot more.

Depends on what sort of flavor you're looking for. Take a look at urban dictionary, it's not far from the truth in regards to towns

Don't rule out PA. It's worth the commute. I grew up in NJ and you couldn't pay me enough to move back. It's a high tax, progressive cesspool that layers laws on top of laws "for your protection". Newtown is very nice. So is New Hope. New Hope/Solebury is the #1 school system in the state in fact.
