That is correct.
The physics, disregarding small factors like rolling resistance at top speed:
Assuming the following:
  • 340whp
  • 2.17m² frontal area
  • 0.31m² drag coefficient
  • 1.219kg³ air density
  • Optimal gearing
  • Flat surface
... you could achieve a theoretical 190.58mph.

If you have other figures you'd want me to throw in there, I'd be happy to do it. The math is really straight forward, I just coded a simple program to handle it for me to avoid manual-data entry.

I love when other math-/physics-geeks chime in. I write stand-alone code to do crap I don't want to type out myself all the time

I've hit close to 187 in my car via gps, but this is the fastest I have a picture of (taken by my passenger of course):

This was probably around 170mph given how inaccurate the speedo is on top.

272 KPH or 170 MPH speedometer indicated in a Sixt rental M3 on the A1 by the 'Ring. Car was riding up against the limiter which felt weird going downhill.

Probably a real 155 MPH as I doubt the limiter had been removed.

Just yesterday, I maxed out at an indicated 270 kph on the A3 here in Germany between Wurzburg and Frankfurt (slight downhill). GPS gave me a reading of 261 kph, which comes out to 162 mph.

EDIT: Just wanted to clarify that the GPS is a stand-alone unit, and not the "in-dash" GPS, which--to my knowledge--doesn't provide this information.

Why is this misinformation repeated over and over?
The electronic limiter is not 155. It's 161.
Not a big deal, but it just irritates me because I've seen it over and over for the past 4 years.
Everyone, say it with me.....One Sixty One.
I know it's true. It's been discussed. It's been written about in car magazines. It's in most test drive article statistics. Oh, and Sapper, above, just did it. I've confirmed it myself (before mods) with two different GPS units. Still accelerating, gently, up to and briefly 162, then gently it backed off and said 161, then 160, then 161, then 162, back to 161, etc. I spent probably 30 seconds there while it oscillated between 162 and 160, all the while the pedal was pressed to the floor. I've done this a couple different times. Speedo was reading somewhere just above 170.

Because all other BMWs (to my knowledge) and german cars are at 155, or so says the manual (it's late, so sorry if my memory is off)

That's why people say 155

In my dream, I hit speedo speed of 186. I was dreaming for I would never drive that fast on public road, even if there was no one around.

Speed limit pulled straight from the hex code in the DME and applying the proper offset/correction factor is set to 252kmh which is about 156.6mph. Not saying that what you observed didn't happen.

legally? 65 mph, of course. lol.

I've probably hit 100 mph without noticing it once, the speed is really deceptive in this car, going 60 mph and 100 mph feels the same.

I have zero incentive to drive fast in VA. Mandatory jail time for going over 100 mph here, talk about an easy way to fuck up your life.

The factory says 155. To bad i was tuned so shortly after I got my car that I never ran into the limiter.
