Right next to your headlamp control, underneath the fog lamp button .. mine is a blank. Anyone know what this does?

For some reason BMW chose not to put them on US models. I know that Audi and Porsche have them on theirs. How do I know? I see dumb-asses driving around on a clear night with their "FOGS" on. Little do they know they are blinding people behind them, or worse, confusing people into thinking their brakes are on.

Rear fogs are a waste, don't worry about a retrofit ... nobody but german car fanatics know what the hell they are or what they're for so they don't help much when it's super foggy. Most people are confused why they're only on the left side and think you're a motorcycle until they come up on you. Not worth the effort of the expense.
And don't get me started on the idiots (invariably most of the ones I see are driving Volvos) with the rear fog on during the middle of a sunny day. Kind of like the stereotypical BMW driver who thinks they need their driving lights on 24/7. <ducking for cover> |

but i agree, most people that have rear fogs have no idea how to use them. however, i think they're cool if used correctly. i retrofited them to my old e34 5er, and only used them in thick fog.

I always thought that the rule was to have only one rear fog light so that people don't get confused with brake lights. However, newer cars now seem to have fog lights on both sides.

^ yea, i've seen it both ways. for example on my old e34, european members showed both sides lighting up. i decided only to do it on my left side.

I have them on my A4. I only use them in heavy downpours, snow storms or fog. I always get the "hey buddy one your brake lights are out"

Volvos have them. They're not on most imported cars in the States because nobody would know how to use them. I doubt it's mentioned in driver's ed.

If rear fog lamps were available in the U S market, I'm afraid that the idiots amongst us would insist on burning them all the time like they want to do with front fog lamps. <g>

Lord sakes, I've seen rear fogs on some AMERICAN cars lately - but it's worse, BOTH SIDES are lit up, not just one, so it really looks like the brakes are being applied.
Don't remember the make/model. |
