▀▄ eas | Joe's 400hp M3 sleeper has hit the streets!

Sleeper
sleep·er /ˈslēpər/

Noun:
A person or animal who is asleep.
A person with a specified sleep pattern: "he was a light sleeper".
A term often referring to what appears to be a ordinary looking stock vehicle that is anything but stock under the hood.

A sleeper (US English) or Q-car (British English) is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior. Sleeper cars are termed such because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car. In some cases the car appears worse due to seeming neglect on the owner's part, typically referred to as "all go and no show". While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to perform at much higher performance levels.

We're particularly a big fan of sleepers, it seems the 400whp barrier has been broken, with a new beast is now hitting the streets.

2011 BMW M3 DCT (Alpine White)
Dynorun 01: Baseline
Dynorun 12: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell Performance Underdrive Pulley Set, Stock X-Pipe/Muffler
Dynorun 19: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell Performance Underdrive Pulley Set, Challenge Race+ X-Pipe (no cats or resonators), Stock Muffler

Overview
- Approximate +49 peak hp gain & 28ft-lb TQ from simple bolt-on mods
- Increased acceleration, throttle response
- Aggressive intake & exhaust note
- OEM+ look & appearance
- Approximately 2-3 hours install time

This goes to show the 400whp barrier is obtainable, without needing to break the bank. We'll also be playing around with the Evolve tune in the upcoming weeks on similarly-equipped M3s to get some comparative data to share.

Enjoy!

Wow... awesome job EAS! Nice to see that 400rwhp is attainable with 91 pump.

On a side note, I'd never call a M3 a sleeper though... a 5.0 Miata is a sleeper, the original Taurus SHO was a sleeper. M3? Not so much IMHO...

Great results for stock cans, but what stands out to me is this 400hp barrier you speak of. The barrier was broken in 2008 with JonMartin's 2008 Sedan with bolt on's and tune.

Most recently we were able to do this delta with the same car/same dyno with the addition of the MS stage 2 charge pipe:

Stock mufflers aren't as restrictive as one would think, but it is heavy! X-pipe on the other hand, is a different story.

Great job EAS for putting together a good host of modifications.

Definitely keep us posted on those others cars you plan on tuning with the Evolve tune!

Aftermarket intakes are worthless..a simple drop in filter does the trick. The oem airbox/air pathways are already very good from factory just like the headers. Seems as though the greatest gains came from the pulley and losing the stock mid section and going completely catless. Just goes to show how crappy the factory pipes are. In any case, job well done for getting 400whp without, like you said, breaking the bank.

Here are some comparison shots of the Macht Schnell Charge Pipe vs the BMW stock piece. Here you can see where that restriction is virtually eliminated along with the "accordion" style ribs from the stock charge pipe and rubber couplers allow for proper engine movement.

Comparison of Upper Intake Charge Pipe (OEM on left, Macht Schnell ICP on right):

Comparison of lower charge pipe (Macht Schnell ICP on left, OEM on right):

As seen from the pictures, the filter base is very restrictive.

As we already know the stock airbox is awesome in the M3, but the dyno shows there is definitely some room for improvement for those looking to modify.

Here's another dyno to show incremental gains. Different M3, similar setup:

2011 BMW M3 (Alpine White)
Dynorun 21: Baseline
Dynorun 30: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 33: Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, OEM Intake, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 36: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 52: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Challenge Race+ X-Pipe (Catless), Akrapovic Slip-On Titanium Exhaust System

While a drop-in filter is definitely an gain from the OEM unit, there are still improvements that can be made for more power.

Tom, bring that badboy out to Famoso on the 10th for the private rental. Conditions will be fantastic, and ripe for more cars to break 11's all motor, nice #'s.

It is far too loud to be a sleeper with a Challenge Race+ resonatorless, catless x-pipe.
