Mact Schnell Air Filter Installed

Okay, I just spent freakin 45 min installing my Mact Schnell filter. I followed Blake's instruction on the DIY.

I had a really really tough time getting the new filter installed. My tensioner was super tight so I had to use brute force and push the filter toward the passenger headlight to create the clearance for the tensioner.

Now with it installed, I feel that the filter is not on that tight! Where the filter mates up with the stock plastic piece is not a tight seal at all. I can basically left upward on the MS filter to get the top half to pop off (bottom half is still slightly secured because of the bottom clips in the stock plastic piece).

So my question to you people with the MS filter, is this normal? Do you find that the upper plastic clips on the stock plastic piece will easily come unclipped if you just lift upwards on the MS filter? Of course the problem is because the upper clips of the plastic piece are just touching the spongy and soft lip of the MS filter.

I think it was relatively easy to lift upwards when I was removing the OEM filter....but it just seems like the MS filter is even easier to lift away.

I'm worried that eventually the filter is going to pop off completely when I'm driving and I'll suck in a leave or bugs.

Did you remove the intake tract also (45 degree elbow going to the manifold) when installing? I find this makes installation much easier than trying to flex the filter to maneuver it into place.

Yes I did remove the intact track (that was what I was referring the plastic piece) when uninstalling. But before inserting the new filter, I inserted the intact track back on and secured it with the clamp. I then put the filter on.

At first, I tried to see if I could install the intact track last, but that wasn't going to work at all.

Review

I just got back from a test drive. I suppose the filter isn't going to be coming off. I suppose my install was done correctly.

My butt dyno isn't detecting any difference. I think the car accelerates through the rpms slightly quicker, but not anything dramatic. As far as the intake sounds, I can't really hear a difference until about pass 5000 rpms. When I step on the accelerator past the indent point, I can clearly hear the intake making a nice air-sucking sound, which I've never heard with the OEM filter.

As long as the filter stays put, I'm satisfied with the product. It was only $99 so if it isn't giving me any real performance benefit, oh well. At least I get a nice intake sound effect now.

Give it some time, the filter is definitely an improvement over the stock piece.

Dynos don't lie.

and 3-5 hp by itself is not noticeable but add in the pulley and the rpi scoops and you got yourself a nice hp gain for cheap...

Agreed - these items add up quick in terms of hp gains.

+1...and the intake sound is noticeably throatier as well. Can't beat a filter for a cheap first upgrade .

But my original question was: do you with the MS filter feel Otis installed tight enough?

Yep, it fits nice & snug. One piece of advise I'd give you is it to make sure that the push-pin that holds the filter in is free of dirt & debris. I cleaned mine with electrical contact cleaner and it was much smoother, and seemed to put a bit more pressure against the filter .
