New York City - photos (56k beware)

I was in NYC earlier in the week (for work) and stayed at the Millenium UN Plaza. Room was nice enough, but I didn't care. I ended up spending most of the time hanging out the window. This was the best view I have ever had from a hotel in the city. (although my friend used to live on 40th and 2nd which made for a pretty awesome view as well). Room was on the 38th floor facing south on 44th St.

Really made me miss the city and the east coast in general (but not the weather).

Anyways, I thought I'd share some of the better shots I got. They're straight from the camera and I'll be messing around in photoshop later in the weekend to see if I can make them 'pop' for printing.

All shot with a Canon 300D and EFS 10-22 wide-angle.

Nice shots! Looks like you got a good copy of the 10-22 lens. Mine wasn't as sharp unfortunately. What settings were you using for the night shots?

Thanks!

Re: the 10-22 - you have to keep this lens above f8 to get decent sharpness.

For these pics, I kept the Aperture at f9 or higher (smaller) but had to improvise a tripod by propping the camera up against the window frame to manage the longer exposures needed. I still have the old Rebel so needed to keep iso under ISO400 to minimise noise. Newer versions (XT or XTi) don't have as much issue with noise. I would update, but choose to spend the money on glass instead.

Thanks - I lucked out. It was an interesting and unexpected effect, that I'll have to try again some time. It was a simple long exposure on an overcast night.

It's a cool effect - I really like it. It adds a little artistic ambiguity to the scene - can't tell if it's day or night.

I've seen this color scheme in your work quite a bit - you're really into the purple-ish blue-ish hue in a big way. Arctic really was the perfect color for your E90.

hahah yeah really! most of the time when i edit photos i only edit them ot make them look closer to real life. then i might intensify the colors somewhat, but i never put in "fake" colors that weren't there. with other people's photos i don't know what they looked like because i wasn't there! so i just do what I think looks neat lol.
