Honestly, I wish I knew. I left the car with him overnight. He is actually a member on this forum, he has a supercharged M3 himself. Maybe he'll chime in.

But I do remember asking if he sanded down the matrix, or did anything crazy with it and he said "no, I just know how to do it". lol I didn't ask him anything else. I'm telling you, it CAN be done.

I don't doubt it can be done. I'm looking for the ways it can be done so I can ask the right questions when I look for a local tinter.

Just make sure that before you let them tint the car, verify that they are 100% able to do it. If they start talking that 'maybe' stuff, move on.

I got my window tint redone today. This is what the vinyl approach looks like. I opted to tint the 3 brake light area as well.

Looks great! IMHO, it's the best solution for the DOT matrix. Sanding and torching.

Thanks man! To be honest, this guy did torch the outside of the window lightly when applying the vinyl. But it wasnt much heat at all.

Its funny my tint shop in Oregon offered this to me 7 months ago and I opted not too because I thought it would look funny. Now seeing it looks good almost a year later I should have done it. Oh well.

I thought it would look cheesey but fortunately it looks really good. The guys at Highline are good, I'm sure they could retro the vinyl if you're having issues with the DOT matrix area.

What's the difference between dotrix mentioned on the video and plain black vinyl strips?

I just wanted to also throw this out there. Had the exact same problem when I tinted my 335 rear window. The person tinting it said its not an issue of the tint sticking to the dot matrix. The problem is the gaps/space between the dots. Makes it hard for the tint to bond.

I asked him about applying a black vinyl strip. He said he would do it but I'd have the same issue as with the tint. He was right. Could still see areas where the black vinyl couldn't adhere correctly. It was less noticeable due to the dark color than the tint however. It's reasons like this that I won't tint my M3.

I will never take my car to another tint place who won't tell me what method they are doing. The last place wouldn't tell me and when I pressed them wanted to use Elmer's glue over the dots. HELL NO. I don't want to sand my window. I don't want to use glue over my window. I don't want my tint to look like a mountain range over the dot matrix. I don't want black vinyl. If I can't tint my window given this, I'd rather have no tint. Nothing worse than a shitty tint job on a very classy expensive car.

One more thing. Tinting the rear window causes viewing issues/distortion because the tint also does not adhere to the rear defroster. It's minor, but noticeable.

Mine came out perfectly. No sanding, the tint bonded between the dots, AND I have a coupe which are the hardest ones to tint. Also, the tint adheres perfectly to the defroster vanes. As I said, if he knows what he's doing, there's no issue.

I don't see how tinting over the dot matrix with none of the above methods is possible. Lets see proof.

Sorry guys, forgot about this. Here are the pics. It was much harder to take good pics of the work, I couldn't get a good one of the door for the life of me. You'll have to take my word on that one. But here are some pics of the back windshield.

Not bad but where's the photo of the dot matrix at the top of the rear window? That's the only afraid concern.

Haha you can't see it, that's the point! Look at the top of the first photo. It's there, just filled in. No vinyl strip, no sanding. I tried to get a good one of the dot matrix on the doors as well but was unsuccessful.

I'm sorry but the top of that window (matrix) still looks bad. I see the air bubbles, they're just less pronounced than when done poorly. What's worse, however, is the big air in the window heater elements. Those things have HUGE air gaps all over the place. Over time this may really get bad for you.

Also, the sides, with the small dot matrix, you can fill those in yourself. Warm it up from the glass side with a heat gun or hair dryer or leave it in the sun all day. Then press down on the film in those areas. They should fill in.

As stated, the pics are bad, and I tried to take close up ones. 2 feet away, you can see no bubble at all, it's completely even. Top as well. It's the best, by the best.
