Rebuilt motor swap increase or decrease resale value?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting an E92 that needed a rebuilt motor swap due to engine damage on the original motor. Car has 45k miles on it, warranty has expired but motor was swapped before warranty expired at a legit dealer with paperwork. "New" motor has 5k miles on it.

Do you think the newer motor will help increase the resale price a few years from now in case I have to sell the vehicle? Price is $43k for 2012. Is that price fair with rebuilt motor?

Did a search but cams up dry. Happy to read a thread if it has been covered already.

I think it would hurt resale value. Unless it was a brand new or rebuilt motor that is fully documented with warranty. When it says 5k miles that means used motor. That sounds like puffing. I fell for that once. Turns out the motor they put in my truck was just a junkyard special. "The original owner was an old lady too."

Honestly, no... I would think that most M3 buyers prefer a car that is all original as a first choice... I don't think that it will hurt the price though... If it was a new factory engine crated and shipped and installed by a BMW dealer with a warranty still in place it would certainly increase the value...

If your trying to buyl the car- a price at market value in the "clean" or "above average" range for a 45k mile M3 is fair...

IMO- $43k is too high... $36-37K is fair... talk them down...

Dealer required oil change at 1,100 miles - maybe that means it's new? Paperwork says "replaced with remanufactured engine assembly" and the dealer charge was > $20k for parts alone, and engine has 1 yr warranty left. Seller says engine shipped from Germany. The radiator and coolant were replaced as well while they were at it. Car has comp, premium and cold weather packages.

Seen a few for sale on ebay and they have never sold so I'm gonna say it hurts more than helps. But for $43k you can find a low mileage zcp so I wouldn't even consider this car.

Nice! That is great news! It means that the engine was replaced with a new engine directly from BMW... My engine was replaced last summer due to rod bearing failure under extended warranty with the factory rebuilt one... I have about the same amount of miles on my new engine as well...

Having said that, I think $38-40k is where the price needs to be- considering the engine is still under warranty for another year... $43k is still too high...

the new motor hurt the value of the car. to a few it may make the car more attractive but to most it will be a deal breaker.

How would 5k miles engine from BMW bring down the value in a 45k mile car mate..?

its not the original motor. most people will not buy a car that has had the motor replaced.

To me, I like the idea of having a fresh motor but I understand to most it is a huge turnoff. Non original panels, like bumpers, even if painted by a bmw collision center, decrease the value of the car to many.

OTOH if it was swapped with a motor that has been stroked to a larger displacement that increases value 100x imho (well maybe not 100x... but it still makes it more desirable)

I would pay a little extra if I knew it was a factory motor with a 2 year warranty... After all, the engine is the most expensive cost mechanically and our cars are well known for rod bearing failures...

I would gladly accept a dealer swapped rebuilt motor with "0" miles

Decrease. My first thought would be "was the car ragged on and thus required a a new engine" or "if that was beaten on, what else is about to break"

this will also apply in the trade in/dealer world.
